AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAND FORKS ND 430 AM CDT TUE JUL 31 2012 .SHORT TERM...TODAY THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING. MODELS IN GENERALLY IN GOOD AGREEMENT THROUGH THE PERIOD. THE ECMWF WAS THE SLOWEST AND THE NAM AND GEM FAST. THE GFS WAS A COMPROMISE. WILL PREFER THE GFS. UPPER LEVEL SHORT WAVE OVER MT WILL MOVE ACROSS THE FORECAST AREA THIS AFTERNOON. SHORT WAVE EXPECTED TO OUTRUN THERMODYNAMIC SUPPORT. WILL KEEP LOW POPS IN THE WESTERN ZONES THIS AFTERNOON. 700 HPA THERMAL RIDGE MOVES OVER THE AREA TONIGHT ALONG WITH LOW LEVEL WIND SHIFT AND CONVERGENT FLOW. WILL INCREASE POPS FOR TONIGHT. PRECIP SHIFT OUT OF THE AREA ON WED. SHORT WAVE OFF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST WILL AFFECT THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE FORECAST AREA WED NIGHT. RETURN FLOW THU WILL KEEP LOW POPS WEST AND HIGHER POPS FOR THU NIGHT WITH LOW LEVEL JET FORECAST. .LONG TERM (FRI THROUGH MON)... MODELS ARE IN GOOD OVERALL AGREEMENT WITH AN ACTIVE PERIOD FRI/SAT...AS A POTENT UPPER LOW ROTATES INTO THE REGION. THERE SHOULD BE AMPLE INSTABILITY/MOISTURE AND FORCING FOR THUNDERSTORMS FRI INTO SAT...SOME POSSIBLY SEVERE GIVEN THE STRONG UPPER LOW.
