A large upper level ridge dominated a large portion of the southern plains but there was a weakness in the ridge across the Lower Mississippi Valley on Sunday, June 21st. With extreme heating which developed during the afternoon and early evening hours of the 21st, isolated strong to severe thunderstorms developed across portions of northeast Louisiana as well as north central and northwest Louisiana. These storms developed in an airmass where temperatures reached the century mark during the afternoon...resulting in a very unstable airmass. These storms produced downburst type winds which downed trees and powerlines across the region.
