A fire burned about 6200 acres of brush near Maalaea in Maui from 7-14 June. The fire was reported around 10 PM on the 7th and was declared extinguished at 12:30 PM on the 14th.

What happened

A fire burned about 6200 acres of brush near Maalaea in Maui from 7-14 June. The fire was reported around 10 PM on the 7th and was declared extinguished at 12:30 PM on the 14th. More than 100 people had to be evacuated from their homes in the late evening of the 7th as the fire moved close to the shoreline. On the 8th, officials closed Honoapiilani Highway for six hours because of the blaze, which stranded thousands of motorists. Many of these people were tourists, who ended up missing their flights out of Maui.

One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation during the event. No significant property damage was reported. County officials were not able to determine the cause of the fire.

OF THE STATE. WINDS WILL WEAKEN SLIGHTLY THIS WEEKEND. CLOUDS AND
SHOWERS WILL FOCUS OVER WINDWARD AND MOUNTAIN AREAS...WITH SOME
CLOUDS AND SHOWERS BEING BLOWN OVER TO LEEWARD SECTIONS BY THE
STRONG TRADES.

WATER VAPOR IMAGERY REVEALS A WEAK UPPER TROUGH JUST TO THE
SOUTHWEST OF THE ISLANDS. HIGH CLOUDS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TROUGH ARE
SPREADING OVER THE BIG ISLAND AND TO THE NORTHWEST NEAR MAUI.
ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NOT MUCH RAIN THIS AFTERNOON...SHOWERS ARE
EXPECTED TO INCREASE OVERNIGHT OVER WINDWARD AREAS...WITH SOME
SHOWERS CROSSING INTO LEEWARD SECTIONS...DUE TO SOME INSTABILITY
BEING CAUSED BY THE UPPER TROUGH. THE TROUGH WILL MOVE OFF TO THE
WEST AND EXIT THE ISLAND CHAIN BY LATE TUESDAY...WITH UPPER LEVEL
RIDGING THEN MOVING IN...BRINGING AN INCREASE IN STABILITY. WITH
TRADES EXPECTED TO STRENGTHEN TUESDAY...MORE SHOWERS MAY BE BLOWN TO
LEEWARD SECTIONS...ALTHOUGH SHOWERS WILL STILL FOCUS OVER WINDWARD
AREAS.

A 1026 MB HIGH CURRENTLY ABOUT 1000 MILES NORTH OF KAUAI IS EXPECTED
TO STRENGTHEN AND MOVE EAST TO A POSITION ABOUT 1500 MILES NORTHEAST
OF THE STATE EARLY THURSDAY MORNING. AS A RESULT...THE PRESSURE
GRADIENT WILL START TO TIGHTEN...AND WINDS WILL START TO INCREASE.
TRADES WILL BECOME MODERATE TO FRESH DURING THE FIRST HALF OF
TUESDAY...THEN INCREASE FURTHER TO FRESH TO STRONG LEVELS TUESDAY
NIGHT. WITH HIGH PRESSURE REMAINING STRONG AND FAR NORTHEAST OF THE
STATE...TRADES WILL REMAIN BREEZY THROUGH FRIDAY. TRADES WILL LOWER
TO MODERATE TO FRESH STRENGTH THIS WEEKEND AS THE PRESSURE GRADIENT
SLACKENS DUE TO A FRONT TO THE NORTH MOVING THROUGH AND WEAKENING
THE HIGH.

AND THE BIG ISLAND SUMMITS...AND INCREASING FURTHER TUESDAY.

AREAS TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH LATE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. THIS MAY BE
