What happened

The episode as NWS FWD wrote it up.

Severe to Exceptional Drought continues to be observed across much of the western half of north Texas according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Crops continue to suffer or are not being planted and stock tanks are drying up due to the lack of rain. Farmers and ranchers are having to buy feed stock for cattle due to the lack of grazing areas. The fire danger continued to rise during the month with 42 of 46 counties having Burn Bans.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORT WORTH TX
1153 PM CST SAT JAN 31 2009

.AVIATION...
THE KFWS WSR 88D VAD WIND PROFILE INDICATES THAT AT 35 TO 40 KNOT
LOW LEVEL JET HAS DEVELOPED AS OF 05Z. THIS SHOULD BRING SOME
MVFR CEILINGS UP INTO THE WACO AREA 09-11Z. COMPUTER MODELS
CONTINUE INDICATE THAT THE METROPLEX WILL BE ON THE WESTERN EDGE
OF THE STRATUS...SO HAVE JUST PLACED SCT018 AT KAFW AND
KFTW...AND INDICATED SCT-BKN018 FROM 13Z THROUGH 17-18Z AT KDFW
AND KDAL. CONDITIONS SHOULD IMPROVE TO VFR BY 18Z AT KDAL AND
KDFW...AND BY 19Z AT KACT. ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE
ALONG AND EAST OF I-35 SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING...BUT THE
CHANCES ARE TOO LOW TO MENTION IN THE TAFS. A COLD FRONT SHOULD
MOVE INTO THE METROPLEX BY 21Z...AND WACO BY 00Z.

.UPDATE...
SOUTHERLY FLOW UNDER CLEAR SKIES MAKING FOR A MUCH WARMER NIGHT
THAN PREVIOUS NIGHTS. SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS LOW CLOUD COVER
CONFINED MAINLY ACROSS DEEP SOUTH TEXAS AND ACROSS THE WESTERN
GULF THIS EVENING...BUT THIS SHOULD START TO STREAM NORTHWARD
OVERNIGHT AS LLJ PUMPS GULF MOISTURE NORTH. LATEST FWS VWP
INDICATES 45 KTS AT 2000 FEET. EXPECTING MOST OF THE CLOUD COVER
TO BE CONFINED TO THE EASTERN HALF OF THE CWA. COLD FRONT STILL ON
SCHEDULE TO MOVE THROUGH NORTH TEXAS TOMORROW EVENING WITH SOME
SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE FAR EASTERN
COUNTIES. FOR TONIGHT...NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGES OTHER THAN TO LOWER
TEMPS BY A COUPLE OF DEGREES ALONG THE RED RIVER. SOUTHERLY WINDS
OVERNIGHT WILL KEEPS TEMPS MUCH WARMER THAN LAST NIGHT.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 349 PM CST SAT JAN 31 2009/
WEAK SHORTWAVE TROUGH IS MOVING ACROSS THE REGION LATE THIS
AFTERNOON AND THE UPPER LEVEL PATTERN OVERNIGHT WILL TRANSITION TO
A LONGWAVE TROUGH OVER THE EASTERN HALF OF THE CONUS. THIS TROUGH
WILL BE SLOW TO EXIT THE EASTERN SEABOARD AND THEREFORE NORTHWEST
FLOW ALOFT WILL PERSIST FOR MUCH THE WEEK.

A WARMER NIGHT IS EXPECTED TONIGHT AS LOW LEVEL WARM AIR ADVECTION
CONTINUES. COLD FRONT /WHICH IS CURRENTLY MOVING INTO NEBRASKA/ IS
EXPECTED TO BE ENTERING THE NORTHWESTERN COUNTIES BETWEEN 12-2 PM
TOMORROW AFTERNOON. THIS TIMING PRESENTS A TEMPERATURE FORECAST
CHALLENGE FOR TOMORROW. IN THE NORTHWEST ZONES...WENT ABOVE
GUIDANCE THINKING THAT COMPRESSIONAL HEATING AHEAD OF THE FRONT IN
COMBINATION WITH CONTINUED WARM AIR ADVECTION WILL ALLOW
TEMPERATURES TO REACH THE LOWER 60S BEFORE COLDER AIR INTRUDES.
FORECASTED HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE NORTHWEST ON SUNDAY ARE VERY
CLOSE TO OBSERVED TEMPERATURES AT 12 PM THIS AFTERNOON. STUCK
CLOSE TO MOS ELSEWHERE WITH TEMPERATURES SLIGHTLY COOLER THAN
TODAY DUE TO MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES EXPECTED ACROSS THE EASTERN HALF
OF THE CWA ON SUNDAY.

MODELS STILL INDICATE A CHANCE FOR RAIN MAINLY EAST OF INTERSTATE 35
TOMORROW AFTERNOON AND NIGHT. DID NOT MAKE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO
PREVIOUS POPS AND LOCATION BUT DID INCREASE CHANCE TO 50 PERCENT
IN THE FAR SOUTHEASTERN COUNTIES. SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS CAN BE
EXPECTED AS MODELS AND FORECAST SOUNDINGS INDICATE WEAK
INSTABILITY AT THE SURFACE AND ABOVE DEPENDING ON THE LOCATION.

FOLLOWED THE TREND OF THE PREVIOUS FORECAST IN UNDERCUTTING MOS
TEMPERATURES SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT. SECOND FROPA ON
TUESDAY EVENING WILL HAVE MINIMAL EFFECTS BUT WILL COOL
TEMPERATURES A BIT ON WEDNESDAY. THE BRUNT OF COLD AIR BEHIND THIS
SECOND FRONT WILL REMAIN EAST OF OUR AREA AS THE LONGWAVE TROUGH
CONTINUES TO PULL FARTHER EAST. TEMPERATURES WILL THEN WARM TO
VALUES ABOVE NORMAL BEGINNING ON THURSDAY AS BREEZY SOUTHERLY
WINDS AND WARM AIR ADVECTION RETURNS IN RESPONSE TO SEVERAL
SURFACE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMS MOVING ACROSS THE CENTRAL AND
NORTHERN PLAINS.
