Damaging Winds and High Wind in Ohio, February 11 to 12, 2009

A trained spotter estimated wind gusts to be approximately 75 mph. A tree was reported down across Township Road 52.

Automated weather observing equipment at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport measured a peak wind gust of 67 mph.

Trees were reported down along State Route 322 in the southern part of the county. Trees were also reported down near North Kingsville in the northeast portion of the county.

A strong cold front moved east across Richland County during the evening of February 11th. Damaging west to southwest winds developed behind the front late in the evening. A peak wind gust of 64 mph was measured by an automated sensor at Mansfield Lahm Airport at 1159 pm. Earlier in the evening, a 66 mph gust was measured at the airport when a line of showers and thunderstorms moved across the county. A gust of 63 mph was measured at 10:19 pm with a 60 mph gust measured at 11:13 pm. Winds finally diminished toward daybreak on the 12th. Ten cars of a moving train were derailed around 11:15 pm. This occurred about halfway between Shiloh and Shelby. No injuries occurred. The strong winds also overturned a semi truck on State Route 13 near Shenandoah around midnight. A second semi truck was overturned in a parking lot in Ontario. A lot of damage was reported across the county with hundreds of trees and power poles toppled. Thousands of people lost power during this event. At one time, more than 25,000 customers were without power in Richland and Ashland Counties. Hundreds of homes in the county sustained damage. Most of this damage was from lost shingles but many homes also lost gutters and sections of siding. A vacant school building in Epworth lost it's entire roof. A couple of the school districts in the county had to delay the start of school because of power outages.

A peak gust of 68 mph was measured by an automated system at the Marion County Airport at 10:53 pm. Winds finally diminished a couple hours before daybreak on the 12th. A semi truck was blown over at 10:42 pm on U.S. Highway 23 near Marion. A second semi was overturned near Marion at 12:14 am resulting in the driver being injured. Hundreds of trees and utility poles were downed in the county causing scattered power outages. Many buildings in the county sustained damage. Most of this was from lost shingles, but a few buildings lost gutters or sections of siding. A large tree fell on a home in southern Marion County causing significant structural damage. Two vehicles in an adjacent garage were also severely damaged.

Winds finally diminished just before daybreak on the 12th. Dozens of trees and a few utility poles were downed in the county causing scattered power outages. At one point, over 100,000 customers were without power in Cleveland alone. Many buildings in the county sustained damage. Most of this was from lost shingles, but a few buildings lost gutters or sections of siding. Several cars were reported damaged from fallen trees. Several schools had to be closed on the 12th because of power outages.

Approximately 2,200 customers in the county were without power Thursday morning. The hardest hit areas were in Rootstown and Ravenna Township. Power was restored to all customers by Friday morning, February 13th.

All but one of the school districts in the county were closed on the 12th because of power outages.

A 74 mph wind gust was measured at the Ashtabula Lighthouse at 5:10 am. A 71 mph wind gust was measured in Conneaut. Winds finally diminished just after daybreak on the 12th. Dozens of trees and many utility poles were downed in the county causing scattered power outages. At one point, up to 25,000 customers were without power in the county. Many homes and buildings in the county sustained damage. Most of this was from lost shingles, but a few buildings lost gutters or sections of siding. Several houses were damaged by fallen trees. A handful of business along Main Avenue in Ashtabula had windows blown out. All but one of the school districts in the county were closed on the 12th because of power outages.
