What happened

The episode as NWS ILM wrote it up.

A boundary that had moved north of the area a day earlier, moved back into the area overnight and early morning. A short-wave trough moved across the area in the morning, and initiated scattered to numerous thunderstorms across northwest portions of the ILM Forecast Area. This activity then tracked to the coast, and increased in coverage and intensity as it fed on rich low level moisture east of the boundary.
