AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DULUTH MN

.DISCUSSION...MAIN FORECAST CONCERN FOR THE SHORT TERM CONTINUES
TO BE THE IMPENDING ARCTIC FRONTAL PASSAGE WITH A WINTRY MIX OF
PRECIPITATION TONIGHT...THE SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW FOR
TUESDAY...AND THEN THE VERY COLD WIND CHILLS TUESDAY AFTERNOON
THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING.

LATEST SFC ANALYSIS SHOWS COLD FRONT JUST CROSSING INTO NWRN
MINNESOTA...WITH TEMPS DROPPING 20 DEGREES IN A FEW HOURS BEHIND
THE FRONT. AT THE SAME TIME...ECHOES ARE INCREASING IN COVERAGE
AND INTENSITY ON REGIONAL RADAR...WITH RAIN ALREADY BEING REPORTED
ACROSS OUR SWRN ZONES. THIS PRECIP IS MAINLY ASSOCIATED WITH AN
UPPER-LEVEL SHORTWAVE LIFTING NE ACROSS THE UPPER MIDWEST AHEAD OF
THE MAIN TROUGH. THE CONCERN IS THAT AS THE COLDER AIR MOVES IN
FROM THE WEST...THE RAIN MAY BECOME FREEZING RAIN FOR A SHORT
PERIOD BEFORE THE PRECIP CHANGES OVER TO SNOW. THIS WILL MOST
LIKELY HAPPEN BETWEEN 9PM AND 3AM TONIGHT. HOWEVER WE EXPECT ALL
OF THE PRECIP TO CHANGE OVER TO SNOW BY 6AM TUESDAY.

THE MAIN SHORTWAVE TROUGH IS THEN EXPECTED TO ROTATE OVER THE
REGION ON TUESDAY...BRINGING LIGHT SNOW TO OUR FCST AREA. BOTH
THE GFS AND NAM SHOW ACCUMULATING SNOW TO SOME DEGREE...WITH THE
HIGHEST AMOUNTS ACROSS NWRN WI. THE SNOW SHOULD QUICKLY TAPER OFF
TO SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS TUESDAY EVENING AS THE UPPER LEVEL
SUPPORTS SHIFTS EAST OF OUR FCST AREA. BECAUSE OF THE WINTRY MIX
OF PRECIP EXPECTED TONIGHT AND SNOW/BLOWING SNOW EXPECTED ON
TUESDAY...HAVE OPTED TO GO WITH A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR ALL
OR OUR FCST AREA THROUGH TOMORROW.

AS THE TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO PLUMMET TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND
TUESDAY NIGHT...WIND CHILL READINGS WILL BECOME DANGEROUS WITH
READINGS RANGING FROM 30 TO 50 BELOW ZERO. THEREFORE HAVE UPGRADED
THE WIND CHILL WATCH TO A WARNING FOR OUR ENTIRE CWA MAINLY FOR
TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY MORNING.

&&

.AVIATION...CONDITIONS WILL DETERIORATE TONIGHT AS THE COLD FRONT
CROSSES THE NORTHLAND...WITH MVFR/IFR CIGS EXPECTED LATER TONIGHT
AND TOMORROW. THE RAIN WILL CHANGE OVER TO FREEZING RAIN OR SNOW
TONIGHT...AND THEN BECOME ALL SNOW BY TUESDAY MORNING AS THE WIND
SHIFTS OUT OF THE NORTHWEST USHERING IN MUCH COLDER AIR. DUE TO THE
STRONG WINDS...BLOWING SNOW WILL COMBINE WITH THE FALLING SNOW TO
CAUSE VERY REDUCED VSBYS.
