AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI
830 PM HST MON JUL 14 2008

.SYNOPSIS...LIGHT TRADE WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO ALLOW AFTERNOON SEA
BREEZES TO FORM ISOLATED SHOWERS UPSLOPE THROUGH WEDNESDAY. BUILDING
TRADES WILL SHIFT MOST RAINFALL WINDWARD BY THE WEEKEND.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
ALTHOUGH TRADE WINDS PERSISTED ACROSS WATERS SURROUNDING THE MAIN
HAWAIIAN ISLANDS...FEW OBSERVATIONS SHOWED SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 10
KNOTS. THUS...SUMMER HEATING ON LAND LED TO WIDESPREAD SEA
BREEZES...WHICH TOGETHER WITH A HIGH INVERSION PRODUCED LOCALLY
HEAVY SHOWERS IN THE AFTERNOON. THESE SHOWERS NOW WERE TAPERING
OFF...THOUGH A FEW WILL LINGER WELL INTO THE EVENING.

ALOFT...A COL BETWEEN TWO MID-LEVEL HIGHS LAY OVER THE ISLANDS...
PROVIDING MUCH OF THE INSTABILITY RAISING THE INVERSION. GUIDANCE
PREDICTS THIS FEATURE TO WANDER AROUND OVER THE ISLANDS THROUGH MOST
OF THE WEEK...SO ANY DEVELOPING SHOWERS WILL CONTINUE TO RECEIVE
SUPPORT. HOWEVER...STRENGTHENING RIDGING ALOFT WILL BE REFLECTED AT
THE SURFACE BY A BUILDING SUBTROPICAL RIDGE...SO INCREASED TRADES
WILL SHIFT PRECIPITATION INCREASINGLY TO WINDWARD SLOPES.

LATER IN THE WEEK...GUIDANCE PREDICTS A PLUME OF MOISTURE FROM THE
DEEP TROPICS TO REACH THE LATITUDE OF THE MAIN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS FAR
TO THE EAST. THIS PLUME...TOGETHER WITH MODERATELY STRONG TRADES...
MAY PRODUCE MORE WIDESPREAD RAINFALL ACROSS THE STATE DURING THE
FIRST HALF OF THE WEEKEND. GIVEN THE DIFFICULTY OF PREDICTING THE
MOTION OF THIS RELATIVELY SMALL FEATURE SO FAR OUT IN TIME...THE
FORECAST MAY REQUIRE SOME ADJUSTMENT THROUGH THE WEEK...BUT IF SUCH
A PLUME IS INDEED CREATED AND DOES REACH US...THEN AT THE VERY LEAST
THE ISLANDS WILL SEE WET TRADES.

&&

.MARINE...
SWELLS FROM THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE AFFECTING SOUTH-FACING SHORES OF
THE STATE WILL BUILD SLIGHTLY THROUGH MIDWEEK...THOUGH SURF HEIGHTS
ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN BELOW THE THRESHOLD FOR A HIGH SURF ADVISORY.

A SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY MAY BE NEEDED IN THE CHANNELS AND AROUND
HEADLANDS BY THE WEEKEND.

.HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
