Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms developed in Alabama during the early afternoon and expanded and spread eastward into western Georgia during the mid-afternoon. Many of these storms produced damaging wind and large hail. An expansive outflow boundary spread eastward across the state in advance of the thunderstorms causing additional thunderstorms to develop further eastward. However, thunderstorms decreased in coverage as they spread further east and all of the activity had ended by 10 pm EDT.

The Northeast Alabama radar (KHTX), 74 km away, was scanning. The volume nearest the first event began at 18:51 UTC.
20 thunderstorm wind, 13 hail, 7 lightning, 1 flood, 1 heavy rain. Local standard time, as filed.
The public reported that penny-sized hail fell for up to 20 minutes northwest of Summerville. Two trees were also blown down in the area.
The public reported that several homes sustained minor roof damage from strong thunderstorm winds. In addition, several street, highway signs, and even some traffic signals were blown down by strong winds. The Muscogee County 911 Center reported that at least ten trees were down in the south central part of the county from Columbus into the northern part of Fort Benning.
The Dade County 911 Center reported penny-sized hail on the west side of Trenton. A tree was also blown down south of Trenton in Rising Fawn and another north of Trenton in Wildwood.
The Catoosa County 911 Center reported that lightning struck a tree on Bell Avenue causing it to fall.
The Floyd County 911 Center reported that a lightning strike caused a structural fire on Vinings Court. Specific damage amounts were not provided.
The Floyd County Emergency Management Director reported that a tree fell on a home causing damage to the structure.
The Polk County Emergency Management Director and the County 911 Center reported that many trees and power lines were down between Fish Creek and Rockmart. Minor damage was reported to the porch of a home in Rockmart.
The Whitfield County 911 Center reported that one tree was blown down onto a power line near Cohutta.
A storm spotter measured a wind gust of 63 mph in Summerville. The Chattooga County 911 Center reported that up to 15 trees were down across the county. Radar data supports that most of this occurred south of a line from Cloudland to Tidings. A couple of these may have fallen during the earlier storm.
The Floyd County Emergency Management Director reported that near two dozen trees and several power lines were down throughout the county. One tree was down on a home in the Rome area.
The Haralson County 911 Center reported that several trees were down within the county, but mostly in the Draketown area.
The Douglas County Emergency Management Director reported that five homes in the Douglasville area were struck by lightning and set on fire. Three of the homes were completely destroyed and the other two suffered major damage. Most of the homes were located in the Chapel Hill area just off Georgia Highway 92, south of Douglasville.
The Paulding County 911 Center reported that a tree was down on a power line.
A deputy with the Gilmer County Sheriff's office observed quarter-sized hail in the Ellijay area. While hail the size of quarters was the largest observed, pea to quarter-sized hail fell for up to five minutes at one location near Ellijay.
The Gilmer County 911 Center reported that several trees were down across the county.
The public observed quarter to golf ball-sized hail in the Douglasville area.
The Cherokee County Emergency Management Director reported that a couple of trees were down on power lines northeast of Canton. This resulted in a road being blocked.
The Floyd County Emergency Management Director observed penny-sized hail.
The Douglas County Emergency Management Director reported that a tree was blown down onto a home causing damage to the structure. When the tree fell, it also brought a power line down with it, which was also lying on the home.
The Times Courier of Ellijay reported that heavy rain on the order of two to 2.5 inches in a one to two hour period resulted in flooding of a parking lot at the East Ellijay Food Lion, located between U.S. Highway 76 and Georgia Highway 515. The parking lot became inundated because of the heavy rain and poor drainage. Customers and employees were trapped inside the building by the rising water and had to be rescued by local emergency management personnel. Parts of the store were flooded as well. Thirty-two vehicles in the parking lot were submerged by the rising water.
The Forsyth County 911 Center reported that at least two dozen trees and several power lines were down in the northern portion of the county. At least five roads were blocked from downed trees. One tree was down on a home causing significant damage to the structure. Another tree was down on a 500 gallon propane tank causing the tank to leak.
The Forsyth County Emergency Management Director reported that lightning resulted in one structural fire as well as setting the adjacent field on fire. A separate brush fire was also reported as a result of lightning. In addition, smoke was reported in one home as a result of a lightning strike.
The Fulton County 911 Center reported that several trees and power lines were down in the vicinity of Welcome All Road west of Interstate 285 in the western part of the city of East Point.
The public observed penny to nickel-sized hail in the northern portion of the county northwest of Cumming and in the Silver City area. Radar data supports that hail of this size or larger likely occurred across a large portion of north central Forsyth county.
An amateur radio operator reported that a tree was blown down onto a home on Burnt Hickory Road at Georgia Highway 120.
The Gwinnett Extra portion of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that lightning struck a home in the 3100 block of Bugle Lane Northwest. The home was declared a complete loss from the resulting fire. There were numerous calls to the 911 center from lightning and wind related incidents as these thunderstorms moved across the county.
The Fannin County 911 Center reported that up to five trees were blown down across the county.
Local Atlanta television stations relayed a report of golf ball-sized hail in the Dacula area. Several reports of penny-sized hail were received from the public in the Dacula area. The hail lasted several minutes at some locations. Radar data indicated that this was one of the strongest storms of the day and persisted in the same area for up to 30 minutes. Penny-sized hail was also reported just northwest of Lawrenceville, but this appeared to have been a different thunderstorm cell. In addition, several reports of three to over four inches of rain were received from the Ducula area with this storm.

The Barrow County Emergency Management Director reported that several trees and power lines were down in the western part of the county along U.S. Highway 29/Georgia Highway 8.
The Hall County Emergency Management Director reported quarter-sized hail in southern Hall county.
The public observed penny-sized hail in far western Jackson county near the Barrow county line.
The Butts County Emergency Management Director reported penny-sized hail.
The public observed penny-sized hail south of Gainesville.
The Hall County Emergency Management Director reported that many trees and power lines were down across the county. Radar velocity and reflectivity data suggests that the majority of the damage was across the southern half of the county.
The Walton County 911 Center reported that numerous trees were blown down across the county.
The Gainesville Times reported that lightning struck a 30 by 10 foot storage building in the 5200 block of Gainesville Street. The building and all of its contents, which included lawn mowers, saws, garden equipment, a pressure washer, and other items were completely destroyed by the resulting fire.
An amateur radio operator reported that heavy rain, on the order of 2 inches in an hour or less, caused a roof of a building on Queen City Parkway, just south of downtown Gainesville, to collapse.
The Jefferson County 911 Center reported that penny-sized hail fell in the northwest part of the county, south of Avera. Radar data supported that large hail likely fell over a larger area than reported.
