Strong and gusty winds developed across northeast Minnesota as an intense low pressure system pushed east of the region. Winds were generally sustained between 25 and 35 mph, but averaged close to 40 mph in Duluth and nearby locations. Wind gusts over 50 mph were common throughout the area with a gust to 60 mph at Duluth International Airport. Numerous trees and limbs were downed and some fell onto power lines, causing widespread power outages. About 200,000 homes were without power for more than 24 hours.
