A winter storm system swept into the Central Plains late the third week of January. Extremely cold temperatures throughout the atmosphere associated with this system allowed only snow to fall across northeast Kansas. The heaviest snowfall was reported during the evening hours on Saturday the 20th and during the early morning hours Sunday the 21st. Once the storm had exited the region Sunday morning, 3-8 of snow was reported across the county warning area. The highest amounts...generally 6 to 8 inches...were over the western half of the warning area...and lesser amounts of 3 to 6 inches covered the eastern half. An indirect fatality occurred on K-99 in Pottawatomie County on Saturday afternoon when two cars collided on slick roads. |Winds did not seem to be a major factor in this particular episode.
