The episode as NWS PAH wrote it up.
This was the first of several freezes on consecutive nights that resulted in extensive damage to some crops, gardens, and even trees. Record warmth in March preceded these freezes. Most growth was well ahead of schedule when the record cold struck. A large Canadian high pressure system drew unseasonably cold air into the region for several days. Low temperatures during this first night of the freeze were just a degree or two below freezing. Most vegetation was spared from significant damage on this first night of the freeze.
The local office's own words before the first event, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Paducah, KY wrote its last area forecast discussion before the first event at Apr 4, 1:56 PM CST, 10 hours 4 minutes earlier.
