AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI
830 PM HST FRI JUN 29 2007

.SYNOPSIS...MODERATE TRADES WILL DIMINISH OVER THE WEEKEND. RAINFALL
WILL TAPER OFF A BIT TOO...REMAINING MOST COMMON OVER WINDWARD AND
MOUNTAIN AREAS...THOUGH SOME STILL WILL FALL OVER LEE SLOPES IN THE
AFTERNOON.

&&

.DISCUSSION...THE TRADE WINDS STILL PREVAILED OVER THE MAIN HAWAIIAN
ISLANDS...BUT BOTH SCATTEROMETER AND IN SITU OBSERVATIONS SHOWED
LOWER SPEEDS THAN THEY DID 24 HOURS AGO. AT UPPER ELEVATIONS OF THE
STATE...SENSOR READINGS REPORTED WIND NOW FAR BELOW THE ADVISORY
CRITERION...IN EXCELLENT AGREEMENT WITH MODEL RUNS FROM LAST NIGHT.
RAIN ACCUMULATION LARGELY HAD CEASED OVER THE SMALLER ISLANDS...
THOUGH WIDESPREAD...IF LIGHT...RAINFALL PERSISTED ALONG WINDWARD
SLOPES OF THE BIG ISLAND. THE INVERSION HAD LOWERED A BIT OVER THE
PAST 24 HOURS...BUT THE CHANGES IN PRECIPITATION APPEARED MORE
CLOSELY RELATED TO THE AVAILABILITY OF ATMOSPHERIC MOISTURE UPWIND.
THUS...THE EXPECTED DRYING TREND INDEED MAY BE APPROACHING...BUT IT
IS PRUDENT TO TREND THE FORECAST IN THAT DIRECTION CAUTIOUSLY...
KEEPING IN MIND THE TRAJECTORY OF THE FRONTAL REMNANTS CURRENTLY
LOCATED NORTHEAST OF THE ISLANDS.

GUIDANCE AGREES FAIRLY WELL THAT THE RIDGE ALOFT WILL ERODE THROUGH
THIS WEEKEND...LEAVING A COL IN ITS PLACE BY MONDAY. MUCH LOWER
HEIGHTS TO THE NORTH OF THE ISLANDS WILL WEAKEN THE SUBTROPICAL
RIDGE AT THE SURFACE TOO...SO THE TRADES ARE EXPECTED TO DIMINISH
FURTHER AS WELL. THE REDUCED OROGRAPHIC FORCING ASSOCIATED WITH THE
DROP IN TRADES WILL LEAD TO LESS FORMATION OF CLOUDS AND RAIN
WINDWARD...THOUGH THE MOIST AIRMASS UPWIND AND THE DIMINISHED
STABILITY ALOFT WILL COMPENSATE IN PART FOR THIS DECREASE AT LEAST
THROUGH SUNDAY.

PAST THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK...THE SOLUTIONS STILL DIVERGE...THOUGH
THERE IS BETTER AGREEMENT THAT RIDGING ALOFT WILL RETURN ONLY
SLOWLY. THE NOGAPS SOLUTION IN PARTICULAR MAINTAINS A SHALLOW BUT
PERSISTENT UPPER TROUGH OVER THE ISLANDS. THUS...IT IS NOT
ALTOGETHER IMPROBABLE THAT WET TRADES MAY RETURN TO THE ISLANDS
SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.

&&

.MARINE...THE SOUTH SWELL HAS ARRIVED...AND LIKELY WILL CONTINUE
BUILDING TONIGHT. AS A RESULT...SURF IS EXPECTED TO REACH THE
ADVISORY THRESHOLD OF 8 FEET ALONG SOUTH-FACING SHORES BY MIDNIGHT.

&&

.HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...

THE SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR MAALAEA BAY...PAILOLO
CHANNEL...ALENUIHAHA CHANNEL...BIG ISLAND LEEWARD WATERS...AND BIG
ISLAND SOUTHEAST WATERS UNTIL 12 AM HST TONIGHT.

THE HIGH SURF ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR SOUTH-FACING SHORES
THROUGH 6 PM HST SUNDAY.
