AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI 830 PM HST SAT JUN 30 2007 .SYNOPSIS...MODERATE TRADES WILL PERSIST INTO THE FIRST HALF OF THE COMING WEEK. RAINFALL WILL BE LIGHT...AND LIMITED MAINLY TO WINDWARD AND MOUNTAIN AREAS...THOUGH SOME STILL WILL FALL OVER LEE SLOPES IN THE AFTERNOON. && .DISCUSSION...MODERATE TRADE WINDS PERSISTED OVER THE MAIN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS...AND THOUGH THEY HAD DIMINISHED FROM EARLIER IN THE WEEK... GUIDANCE SUGGESTED THAT THEY HAD BOTTOMED OUT FOR THE TIME BEING. RAIN ACCUMULATION HAD DROPPED OFF CONSIDERABLY DURING THE DAY... DESPITE HIGH PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES NEAR THE BIG ISLAND. THE RELATIVELY LOW INVERSION HEIGHTS EVIDENT IN BOTH LOCAL SOUNDINGS NO DOUBT PLAYED A PART...THOUGH GIVEN THE WEAK RIDGING ALOFT THE SOURCE OF THE RESPONSIBLE SUBSIDENCE WAS NOT ENTIRELY CLEAR. GUIDANCE AGREES FAIRLY WELL THAT THE WEAK RIDGE ALOFT WILL ERODE FURTHER...LEAVING A COL IN ITS PLACE BY MONDAY. MUCH LOWER HEIGHTS TO THE NORTH OF THE ISLANDS WILL WEAKEN THE SUBTROPICAL RIDGE AT THE SURFACE TOO...SO THE TRADES ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN ON THE SLOW SIDE OF AVERAGE...LEADING TO DIMINISHED OROGRAPHIC FORCING...AND THUS CONTINUED MODERATELY DRY CONDITIONS. PAST THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK...THE SOLUTIONS PREDICT THAT RIDGING ALOFT WILL RETURN ONLY SLOWLY. MOST MODELS MAINTAIN A SHALLOW BUT PERSISTENT UPPER TROUGH OVER THE ISLANDS UNTIL THURSDAY OR FRIDAY... WHEN HEIGHTS WILL REBOUND AGAIN...ALLOWING THE SUBTROPICAL RIDGE TO REBUILD AT THE SURFACE TOO. STRONGER TRADES WILL PRODUCE MORE WIDESPREAD TRADE-WIND SHOWERS...AND THE MOIST AIRMASS UPWIND FINALLY MAY CONTRIBUTE AS WELL.
