High pressure north of the state and low pressure centers near Kodiak Island and over the Bering Sea created a strong pressure gradient and caused high winds to occur on the night of the 3rd and morning of the 4th at Kaktovik. The Barter Island AWOS reported east-southeast winds gusting to 67 knots (77 mph) at 0215AST on the 4th. The highest sustained wind reported at this location was 55 knots (63 mph) at 0515AST.
