What happened

The episode as NWS PAH wrote it up.

Two to three inches of snow fell across most of western Kentucky, mainly from Madisonville south and west. Sleet was mixed with the snow along the Tennessee border, which held accumulations down to one-quarter inch from Fulton and Clinton east to Murray. Roads were initially wet, then became ice and snow-covered as precipitation continued. Kentucky State Police estimated about 30 accidents occurred in their westernmost district. One accident on Interstate 24 involved serious injuries. The injured woman was trapped in her vehicle after it overturned at the 35-mile-marker in Lyon County.

.DISCUSSION...

SORRY FOR THE LACK OF HEADS UP ON THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY.
LONG MORNING HERE. AS STATED YESTERDAY...SEE NO REASON TO NOT
BELIEVE THE GFS GIVEN ITS HANDLING OF THE EVENT FRIDAY NIGHT AND
SATURDAY. ECHOES ALREADY OVER SOUTHEAST MISSOURI...BUT IT WILL
TAKE AWHILE FOR THE COLUMN TO SATURATE ENOUGH FOR PRECIPITATION
TO REACH GROUND. HOWEVER...THERE IS A LOT OF MOISTURE THROUGHOUT
THE DEPTH OF THE TROPOSPHERE UPSTREAM THAT WILL HELP WITH THE
SATURATION PROCESS.

WILL LIKELY SEE A MIX OF SLEET AND SNOW IN THE FAR SOUTHERN
PORTIONS OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI...AS GFS SOUNDINGS INDICATE A NEAR
MELTING LAYER AROUND 750MB IN THOSE AREA. EVERYWHERE ELSE WILL SEE
SNOW...AS THE WARM LAYER DOES NOT REACH ANY FURTHER ACROSS THE
AREA. RATIOS OF LIQUID TO SNOW WILL BE CRITICAL...BUT WITH .15
INCHES OF LIQUID QPF OR MORE...2 TO 3 INCHES WILL BE POSSIBLE IN
THE ADVISORY AREA.

WOULD PREFER THE MAV POPS BE HIGHER...BUT HAVE TO GO WITH THE
TRENDS AND OBSERVATIONS AT THIS POINT. THEREFORE...KEPT POPS IN
THE LIKELY RANGE FOR NOW...BUT MAY END UP AS CATEGORICAL POPS FOR
THE AFTERNOON PACKAGE.
