AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NORMAN OK
1018 AM CDT THU OCT 6 2005

.UPDATE...
THE RIGHT-ENTRANCE REGION OF THE UPPER JET WILL BE OVER NORTHERN
OKLAHOMA TODAY. AT THE SAME TIME... DRY AIR WILL BE OVER THAT
AREA... WHILE GREATER AMOUNTS OF MOISTURE WILL BE OVER THE
REMAINDER OF OKLAHOMA AND NORTH TEXAS. THIS WILL RESULT IN
SCATTERED AREAS OF LIGHT RAIN... WITH SOMEWHAT HEAVIER RAIN IN OUR
TEXAS COUNTIES. THE CURRENT FORECAST HAS QPF VALUES THAT APPEAR TO
BE TOO HIGH OVER MOST OF THE AREA... AND THE UPCOMING UPDATE WILL
ADJUST THAT. IT WILL ALSO ADJUST A FEW OF THE 3-HOURLY VALUES TO
BETTER MATCH CURRENT AND EXPECTED CONDITIONS. THIS WILL NOT AFFECT
MAJOR POINTS LIKE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES OR POPS... HOWEVER. SINCE
THE RAIN WILL BE MOSTLY STRATIFORM IN NATURE... WE HAVE MADE THE
MINOR MODIFICATION OF CHANGING RAIN SHOWERS TO RAIN IN TODAYS
FORECAST.

.PREV DISCUSSION... (ISSUED 414 AM CDT THU OCT 6 2005)

DISCUSSION...
MAIN AREA OF PRECIPITATION THIS MORNING EXTENDS FROM ARCHER CITY
TO ATOKA... BUT RAIN ALSO CONTINUES TO DEVELOP AND MOVE NORTHEAST
FROM SOUTHWEST TO CENTRAL OKLAHOMA. THERE IS A DECENT DEPTH OF
MOISTURE AVAILABLE THIS MORNING AND AREAS OF RAIN WILL CONTINUE
THROUGH THE MORNING. SOME DRIER LOW LEVEL AIR IS ADVECTING INTO
THE NORTHERN PART OF THE AREA WHICH WILL KEEP POPS SOMEWHAT LOWER.

NEXT SHORTWAVE WILL MOVE THROUGH THE AREA TONIGHT AND FRIDAY
MORNING. AGAIN WE WILL HAVE ABUNDANT MID-LEVEL MOISTURE SO WILL
SEE WIDESPREAD CLOUDINESS AND SCATTERED SHOWERS WITH THE HIGHEST
CHANCES IN THE SOUTH AGAIN. RIDGING FINALLY SETS UP OVER THE AREA
AFTER PASSAGE OF THIS SHORTWAVE SO CLOUDS WILL BEGIN TO DECREASE ON
FRIDAY. TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN QUITE COOL HOWEVER WITH HIGH
TEMPERATURES 10 TO 20 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL.

SOME DIFFERENCES IN TIMING OF THE NEXT SIGNIFICANT WAVE EARLY NEXT
WEEK. SCATTERED PRECIP LOOKS LIKE A GOOD BET IN ANY OF THE
SCENARIOS WITH TIMING OF THE COLD FRONT BEING THE MAIN DIFFERENCE
TO AFFECT THE FORECAST. DID NOT HAVE A LOT OF TIME TO LOOK AT THE
NEW ECMWF SO HAVE NOT MADE ANY SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO THE
EXTENDED. DID SOME MINOR ADJUSTMENTS TO SOME OF THE TEMPERATURES
TO MATCH BETTER WITH SURROUNDING OFFICES.

Thunderstorms and showers produced rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches over parts of western north Texas during the evening of October 5 and morning of October 6 and produced minor to moderate flooding along the Little Wichita River in Archer and Clay counties. The USGS river gage site recorded a crest of 23.9 feet, 1.9 feet above flood stage around 1:00 am CST on October 8, and the river remained at flood stage from 11:30 am CST on October 6 to 2:30 am CST on October 9.Further downstream on the Little Wichita River and just downstream of Lake Arrowhead, the USGS river gage site near Henrietta, TX also recorded a crest above flood stage on October 8. The Little Wichita River near Henrietta crested at 20.5 feet, 2.5 feet above flood stage, at 3:00 pm CST on October 8, and remained above flood stage from 12:30 pm CST to 9:30 pm CST on October 8. Only minor lowland flooding occurred along the Little Wichita River in Archer and Clay counties during this event, and beneficial inflows into Lake Arrowhead helped raise lake elevations and conservation storage in the reservoir.
