AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ELKO NV
100 PM PDT FRI JUL 29 2005

.SYNOPSIS...MOIST UNSTABLE AIR WILL REMAIN OVER CENTRAL AND
NORTHERN NEVADA THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK BRINGING THE RISK OF SHOWERS
AND THUNDERSTORMS.
&&

.DISCUSSION...WV IMAGERY SHOWS WEAK VORT FEATURE AND ASSOCIATED
CLOUDS PUSHING SLOWLY OUT OF NE NEVADA. CONVECTION DEVELOPING OVER
CLEAR...UNSTABLE AREAS BEHIND VORT FEATURE. 12Z ELKO SOUNDING SHOWED
MOIST PROFILE WITH PWAT OF .94 INCHES...LI OF -2 AND CAPE OF 580 J/KG
ASSUMING MAX TEMP OF 85F. NAM INITIALIZED WELL AND SHOWS SLIGHT
DRYING IN PROFILE BEHIND VORT FEATURE DURING AFTERNOON. NAM FORECAST
SOUNDING FOR ELKO LOWERS PWAT TO .75 INCHES WHICH SEEMS REASONABLE
BASED ON WV IMAGERY. FORECAST SOUNDING ALSO GIVES LI OF -3 AND 500
J/KG OF CAPE. LACK OF DYNAMIC SUPPORT WITH EXITING SHORTWAVE MAY HELP
INHIBIT STRENGTH OF CONVECTION. STORMS WILL STILL BE CAPABLE OF
PRODUCING LOCALLY HEAVY RAINS AND STRONG DOWNDRAFTS.

OTHERWISE...MODELS CONTINUE TO KEEP RIDGE CENTERED IN VICINITY OF 4-
CORNERS AREA...THOUGH NAM HEIGHTS ARE HIGHER OVER CWA THAN GFS. GFS
CONTINUES TO BRING TROF NEAR REGION BY MID WEEK WHICH WOULD BRING
DRIER AIR INTO WESTERN CWA. WITH THIS PATTERN...DO NOT SEE ANY MAJOR
MOISTURE SURGES COMING INTO CWA...THOUGH MOISTURE ALREADY IN PLACE
WILL NOT BE GOING ANYWHERE IN A HURRY. FOR THE FORECAST...NO MAJOR
CHANGES WERE MADE. POPS WERE DECREASED SLIGHTLY FOR THE DAYTIME
PERIODS NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS...BUT GENERALLY MAINTAINED SCATTERED
WORDING. HIGHEST POPS LOCATED IN EASTERN CWA WHERE MOISTURE
WILL BE MOST PREVALENT. ALSO MAINTAINED TREND OF LOWER POPS BY
MIDWEEK AS DRIER AIR MOVES INTO WESTERN PORTIONS OF CWA.
RELUCTANT TO MAKE TOO MANY CHANGES IN EXTENDED SINCE MODELS WILL
CONTINUE TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MOISTURE FIELDS AND SMALLER SCALE
WAVES IN SW FLOW AS TROF APPROACHES EARLY NEXT WEEK. SAVADEL
&&

.AVIATION...TAFS AND TWEBS ADEQUATELY COVER ALL EXPECTED WEATHER.
EXPECT THUNDERSTORMS TO ONCE AGAIN FORM THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING
ACROSS ALL ROUTE CORRIDORS WITH ACTIVITY ACROSS THE GREAT BASIN.
ERRATIC WINDS...BRIEF HEAVY RAIN MAY ACCOMPANY THESE STORMS AS THEY
MOVE THROUGH THE GREAT BASIN WHICH WILL NEED TO BE MONITORED THROUGH
THE EVENING. FEHRN.
&&

.LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...NONE.
