Icy conditions from light freezing drizzle developed rapidly along the Kansas Turnpike near the Admire exit where two accidents occurred within about a half hour of each other. In the first accident, an SUV left the road and rolled injuring 3 occupants who were taken to an Emporia Hospital. In the second accident, another SUV hit the concrete median, but no injuries were reported. Freezing drizzle continued to increase across all of northeast Kansas the rest of the day causing very slippery and treacherous driving conditions. Numerous accidents were reported especially in and around the Topeka and Lawrence areas on the 10th. Periodic light freezing drizzle, dense fog and cold temperatures lingering into the 12th causing a continuation of slippery and treacherous driving conditions especially on untreated streets and rural roads. Many schools cancelled classes for several days due to the poor road condtions with numerous minor accidents reported throughout the area during this period.
