HAWAIIAN ISLANDS FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI
400 PM HST SAT JUN 4 2005

.SYNOPSIS...
A HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE NORTH OF THE STATE WILL MAINTAIN TRADEWINDS
THROUGH THE WEEKEND AND INTO THE COMING WEEK. CLOUDS AND SHOWERS
WILL TYPICALLY FAVOR WINDWARD AND MAUKA LOCATIONS IN THE NIGHT
THROUGH MORNING HOURS. SLIGHT CHANGES IN ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS WILL
PRODUCE FLUCTUATIONS IN OVERALL SHOWER ACTIVITY.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
A SPLENDID FIRST HALF OF THE WEEKEND TODAY WITH GENERALLY PARTLY
CLOUDY SKIES AND SHOWERS FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. 12 HOUR TOTALS THROUGH
2 PM THIS AFTERNOON WERE A FEW HUNDREDTHS AT BEST FOR THOSE TWENTY
OR SO GAGES THAT ACTUALLY RECORDED ANYTHING AT ALL. THE DRY
CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE EVENING HOURS...BUT A SHOWER
BAND ASSOCIATED WITH A TRADE WIND SURGE WILL BRING AN INCREASE IN
SHOWERS EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. THE BAND OF CLOUDS AND SHOWERS MARKS A
BOUNDARY OF STRONGER TRADES TO THE EAST OF THE BAND RUNNING INTO
WEAKER TRADES TO THE WEST OF THE BAND. THE SHOWER BAND IS CURRENTLY
LOCATED ABOUT 240 MILES EAST OF THE ISLANDS AND APPROACHING AT A
SPEED JUST OVER 20 MILES PER HOUR. IF THIS MOVEMENT
PERSISTS...EXPECT AN ARRIVAL AROUND 3 AM SUNDAY MORNING...THOUGH
LETS GIVE OR TAKE AN HOUR OR TWO. IT WAS A BIT UNCLEAR THIS MORNING
HOW WELL THE BAND WOULD HOLD TOGETHER TODAY...BUT IT HAS PROVEN ITS
WORTH AND THE FORECAST PACKAGE REFLECTS AN INCREASE IN CLOUDS AND
SHOWERS IN THE LATE TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING. ONCE THE BAND
PUSHES THROUGH...EXPECT A DRYING TREND STARTING IN THE MID TO LATE
MORNING.

TO START THE WORK WEEK...MODELS CONTINUE TO INDICATE A DEEPENING
INVERSION STARTING SUNDAY NIGHT...REACHING 10 THOUSAND FEET OR SO
MONDAY AND HOVERING IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD WELL INTO THURSDAY. HAVING
A HIGHER THAT NORMAL INVERSION ALLOWS FOR DEEPER TRADE WINDS CLOUDS
AND INCREASED SHOWER ACTIVITY...BUT ONLY IF THERE IS ENOUGH
AVAILABLE LOW LEVEL MOISTURE TO GET THINGS GOING. OVERALL...MODELS
SUGGEST A DRIER AIRMASS IN PLACE OVER THE ISLANDS NEXT WEEK. BELIEVE
THE DRIER SOLUTION WILL BE THE MAJORITY CONDITION...WITH PATCHES OF
INCREASED LOW LEVEL MOISTURE RIDING IN ON THE TRADES TO PRODUCE
PERIODS OF INCREASED CLOUDS/SHOWERS. A RATHER FUTILE EFFORT TO
ATTEMPT TO TIME THESE PERIODS THIS FAR IN ADVANCE...SO WILL DEFER
TO A TYPICAL TRADEWIND FORECAST WITH A DRY TILT FOR NOW AND ALLOW
FUTURE SHIFTS TO FINE TUNE AS THESE PATCHES OF INCREASED MOISTURE
BECOME APPARENT.

&&

.MARINE...
A STORM EAST OF NEW ZEALAND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE ADVISORY
LEVEL SURF NEXT WEEK. CURRENT ESTIMATES CALL FOR A MEDIUM TO LARGE
SOUTH SWELL REACHING THE ISLANDS THURSDAY.

&&

.HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
NONE.
