Hurricane Katrina moved away from south Florida just north of the Keys on Friday, August 26th, then into the central Gulf of Mexico during the 27th and 28th before making landfall just east of New Orleans on the 29th. Tide levels along Florida's west coast and in Tampa Bay remained about 1 foot above normal the 28th and 29th as Hurricane Katrina moved away.

Hurricane Katrina moved away from south Florida just north of the Keys on Friday, August 26th, then into the central Gulf of Mexico during the 27th and 28th before making landfall just east of New Orleans on the 29th. Tide levels along Florida's west coast and in Tampa Bay remained about 1 foot above normal the 28th and 29th as Hurricane Katrina moved away. A storm surge of 2.07 feet was recorded at Cedar Key at 5:12 PM EDT on the 29th but the highest storm tide was 5.09 feet and was recorded at 10:06 AM EDT on the 29th.

CENTRAL GULF COAST LANDFALL AROUND NOON ON MONDAY. AS KATRINA HAS
INTENSIFIED ITS CIRCULATION HAS GROWN LARGER.  KATRINA REMAINS THE
DOMINANT INFLUENCE IN OUR FORECAST. KTBW 12Z SOUNDING SHOWS 2.22
PWAT AND 3782 J/KG CAPE AND WIND SE 30 KT AT 3000 FT.  TODAY THROUGH
TUESDAY EXPECT TO SEE SCATTERED SHOWERS AND ISOLATED AFTERNOON
TSTORMS TO DEVELOP WITHIN THE VERY MOIST AIR MASS COVERING THE
FA...WITH THIS CONVECTION AGAIN MOVING RAPIDLY NORTH TO NORTHWEST IN
THE DEEP LAYERED SELY TO SLY WIND FLOW DRIVEN BY THE CIRCULATION OF
KATRINA.  TODAY...AFTERNOON HEATING AND CONVECTION WILL ASSIST IN
MIXING DOWN GUSTY WINDS UP TO 30 MPH AS THE STRONG AMBIENT FLOW
ASSOCIATED WITH KATRINA GETS TRANSPORTED DOWN TO THE SURFACE.

CURRENT FORECAST PACKAGE LOOKS GOOD NO CHANGES ANTICIPATED.

FEET ABOVE NORMAL DEVELOPING FROM LEE COUNTY NORTH TO PASCO COUNTY
BY LATER TODAY AND TONIGHT...AND POSSIBLY 3 TO 5 FEET ABOVE NORMAL
DURING MONDAY AND TUESDAY FROM HERNANDO COUNTY AND CITRUS COUNTY
WITH AS MUCH AS 5 TO 7 FEET ABOVE NORMAL AROUND CEDAR KEY AND SOUTH
FACING BEACHES OF LEVY COUNTY. A COASTAL FLOOD WATCH WILL BE ISSUED
TODAY.  IN ADDITION...LARGE SWELLS WILL GENERATE LARGE BREAKING WAVE
ACTION AND RIP CURRENTS ALONG AREA BEACHES. WINDS AND SEAS WILL
GRADUALLY DECREASE AND SUBSIDE BY LATE TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY AS
KATRINA MOVES AWAY AND HIGH PRESSURE BUILD IN OVER THE WATERS IN ITS
WAKE.

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR WEST CENTRAL AND SOUTHWEST
FLORIDA.

.DAY ONE...TODAY:

POWERFUL HURRICANE KATRINA IS MOVING WEST NORTHWEST OVER EAST CENTRAL
GULF OF MEXICO EARLY THIS MORNING. KATRINA IS EXPECTED TO TURN TOWARD
THE NORTHWEST LATER TODAY AND WILL BE APPROACHING THE NORTH CENTRAL
GULF COAST EARLY ON MONDAY.

AS KATRINA MOVES TOWARD THE NORTH CENTRAL GULF COAST TODAY THE
COASTAL WATERS ALONG THE FLORIDA WEST COAST WILL REMAIN QUITE
HAZARDOUS WITH SOUTHEAST TO SOUTHERLY WINDS IN THE 20 TO 25 KNOTS
RANGE AND SEAS OF 10 TO 14 FEET...ESPECIALLY BEYOND 20NM. MARINERS
SHOULD REMAIN IN PORT UNTIL HURRICANE KATRINA MOVES OUT OF THE AREA.
IN ADDITION TO THE WINDS AND HIGH SEAS INCREASING WAVE ACTION WILL
CAUSE ROUGH SURF AND LARGE BREAKING WAVE ACTION AND AN INCREASED
THREAT OF RIP CURRENT ALONG AREA BEACHES TODAY. IF YOU PLAN TO VISIT
THE BEACH TODAY HEED THE ADVISE OF THE BEACH PATROL

OVER THE LAND AREA ABUNDANT TROPICAL MOISTURE WILL AGAIN SUPPORT
SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS AT ANY
TIME WITH THE SHOWERS AND STORMS EXPECTED TO MOVE TO THE NORTH AND
NORTHWEST AT 20 TO 25 MPH. ALTHOUGH SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE NOT
EXPECTED TODAY...OCCASIONAL LIGHTNING STRIKES...GUSTY WINDS UP TO 35
MPH AND LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH SOME OF THE
STRONGER STORMS THAT DEVELOP AND MOVE ACROSS THE REGION.

SCATTERED MORNING SHOWERS...FOLLOWED BY SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS
DURING THE EACH AFTERNOON THROUGH THE PERIOD. THE MAIN HAZARDS FROM
THE STORMS WILL BE OCCASIONAL LIGHTNING...GUSTY WINDS AND LOCALLY
HEAVY RAINFALL.
