HAWAIIAN ISLANDS FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI
830 PM HST THU MAY 13 2004

.SYNOPSIS...
LIGHT WINDS WILL BECOME NORTHERLIES ACROSS THE WESTERN ISLANDS
SATURDAY THROUGH LATE MONDAY AS A TROUGH DRIFTS EASTWARD THROUGH THE
ISLAND CHAIN...THEN BACKTRACKS. WINDS OVER THE EASTERN ISLANDS WILL
REMAIN LIGHT THROUGH THE FORECAST PERIOD. LOW CLOUDS AND SHOWERS
WILL FAVOR THE AFTERNOONS AND EVENINGS...THEN DECREASE EACH NIGHT.
SHOWERS MAY BECOME HEAVY AT TIMES...ESPECIALLY OVER THE WESTERN AND
CENTRAL PORTIONS OF THE CHAIN.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
HAWAIIAN WEATHER THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK WILL BE GOVERNED BY
A SURFACE TROUGH EXPECTED TO MOVE IN FROM THE WEST LATE
FRIDAY...STALL NEAR MAUI AND THE BIG ISLAND THROUGH MONDAY...THEN
BACKTRACK ACROSS THE WESTERN ISLANDS AS IT WEAKENS THROUGH THE REST
OF THE FORECAST PERIOD. A LONGWAVE UPPER TROUGH IS EXPECTED TO SET
UP WEST OF KAUAI...NORTH TO SOUTH ROUGHLY ALONG 170W. SHORTWAVE
TROUGHS WILL PASS THROUGH THIS FEATURE FOR THE NEXT FIVE OR SIX
DAYS...KEEPING THE SURFACE TROUGH OVER THE ISLANDS ACTIVE.

OVERCAST LAYERED CLOUDS WEST OF THE MAIN ISLANDS ARE MASKING THE
LONG-FORECAST FORMATION OF A SURFACE LOW. GFS SHOWS THIS LOW WILL
FORM JUST WEST OF KAUAI TONIGHT AND MOVE RAPIDLY NORTH THROUGH THE
WEEKEND. THE TROUGH EXPECTED TO GOVERN OUR WEATHER IS ASSOCIATED
WITH THIS LOW.

WHILE PREVIOUS DISCUSSIONS CENTERED MAINLY AROUND THE CONTINUED
LIGHT WINDS FOR THE EASTERN ISLANDS...AND THE INTRUSION OF
POST-TROUGH NORTHERLIES ACROSS THE WESTERN ISLANDS THIS
WEEKEND...WE NOW NEED TO LOOK AT THE PROBABILITY OF SUSTAINED HEAVY
RAINFALL AND THE POSSIBILITY OF FLOODING. NOGAPS AND GFS ARE IN
GOOD AGREEMENT WITH THE ARRIVAL AND STALLING OF THE SURFACE TROUGH.
BOTH MODELS PAINT A SUSTAINED PRECIPITATION BAND OVER THE ISLANDS
THROUGH MIDWEEK NEXT WEEK...WITH BURSTS OF ACTIVITY AS SHORTWAVE
UPPER TROUGHS PASS THROUGH THE LONGWAVE TROUGH WEST OF THE ISLANDS.
IT NOW APPEARS THAT THE CENTRAL ISLANDS WILL RECEIVE THE BULK OF
ANY HEAVY RAINFALL DURING THE EARLY AND MIDDLE PARTS OF THE NEXT
WORK WEEK. THE WESTERN ISLANDS WILL BEGIN GETTING WET
TOMORROW...BUT THE TROUGH WILL BE MOVING SOUTHEASTWARD THROUGH THE
WEEKEND AND RAINFALL OVER KAUAI MAY ACTUALLY BEGIN TO DECREASE AFTER
SUNDAY.

THE FORECAST FOCUS OF ANY HEAVY RAINFALL MAY CHANGE ACCORDING TO
WHERE THE SURFACE TROUGH ACTUALLY STALLS...OR IF THE LONGWAVE UPPER
TROUGH SETS UP FARTHER EAST OR WEST THAN CURRENTLY FORECAST.

IN SHORT...A WET WEATHER PATTERN IS POISED TO AFFECT THE MAIN
HAWAIIAN ISLANDS THROUGH THE WEEKEND AND MOST OF NEXT WEEK. STAY
TUNED...
