HAWAIIAN ISLANDS FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...
HIGH PRESSURE NORTHEAST OF THE STATE WILL PROVIDE MODERATE TRADE
WINDS THROUGH THE WEEK. SHOWERS WILL FAVOR WINDWARD AND MAUKA
AREAS...THOUGH A FEW MAY BLOW LEEWARD IN THE OVERNIGHT HOURS.
INCREASED SHOWER ACTIVITY IS EXPECTED LATER IN THE WORK WEEK AS THE
REMNANTS OF CELIA PASS OVER THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE ISLAND
CHAIN. THESE SHOWERS MAY BECOME ENHANCED BY AN UPPER LEVEL LOW
FORECAST TO DEVELOP NORTHWEST OF THE ISLANDS.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
MODERATE TRADE WINDS WILL PERSIST THROUGH THE WEEK...THANKS TO A
NEARLY STATIONARY AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE NORTHEAST OF THE STATE.
THUS...SHOWER ACTIVITY WILL FAVOR WINDWARD AND MAUKA PORTIONS OF THE
STATE WITH A FEW SHOWERS BRIEFLY SPREADING LEEWARD.

AN UPPER LEVEL LOW SEVERAL HUNDRED MILES NORTHWEST OF KAUAI HAS
GENERATED MODEST INSTABILITY OVER THE ISLANDS. THIS INSTABILITY IS
EVIDENT IN THE OVERNIGHT SOUNDINGS WHICH SHOW A GOOD LOW LEVEL
MOISTURE UP TO 7500 FEET. GIVEN THESE CONDITIONS...EXPECT A LITTLE
MORE SHOWER ACTIVITY THAN HAS BEEN THE CASE OVER THE PAST SEVERAL
DAYS. NO PROBLEMS ARE EXPECTED FROM THESE SHOWERS AS THE MODERATE
TRADE WINDS MOVE THEM ALONG. HOWEVER...THE LEEWARD COAST OF THE BIG
MAY EXPERIENCE SOME HEAVIER SHOWERS THIS AFTERNOON. THIS DID OCCUR
YESTERDAY SOUTH OF KAILUA KONA...AND SOME SHOWERS LINGERED IN THE
KEALAKEKUA VICINITY OVERNIGHT. THE CURRENT FORECAST ADVERTISES
SCATTERED SHOWERS IN THIS AREA THIS AFTERNOON...AND WILL WATCH THE
AREA FOR SIGNS OF HEAVY SHOWER DEVELOPMENT TODAY.

THE NEXT FORECAST CHALLENGE IS THE ARRIVAL TIME AND IMPACTS OF THE
REMNANTS OF CELIA. THIS DECAYED TROPICAL SYSTEM IS ESSENTIALLY JUST
AN AREA OF ENHANCED SHOWERS...BUT IT MAY STILL DELIVER SOME HEAVY
SHOWERS LATER IN THE WORK WEEK. AN UPPER LEVEL LOW FORECAST TO
DEVELOP TO THE NORTHWEST OF KAUAI WILL CREATE MODERATELY UNSTABLE
CONDITIONS OVER THE ISLANDS AND SUPPORT THE POSSIBILITY OF HEAVY
SHOWERS. THE LATEST RUN OF THE GFS MODEL SLOWS THE ARRIVAL OF CELIAS
REMNANTS TO LATE THURSDAY...NEARLY 12 HOURS SLOWER THAN THE PREVIOUS
MODEL RUN. THE FOCUS THE ENHANCED MOISTURE IS OVER THE SOUTHERN
PORTION OF THE ISLAND CHAIN...NAMELY THE BIG ISLAND AND MAUI. THE
CURRENT FORECAST PACKAGE CONTAINS A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS LATE
WEDNESDAY NIGHT. ADJUSTMENTS FOR THE AFTERNOON PACKAGE WILL LIKELY
INCLUDE PUSHING THE ARRIVAL TIME BACK TO THURSDAY WITH CONDITIONS
DRYING OUT FOR THE WEEKEND.
