SOUTH/SOUTHWEST ALASKA FORECAST DISCUSSION 900 PM ADT THU APR 24 2003 ANALYSIS AND FORECAST... THE EASTERN MAINLAND REMAINS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THE LARGE AND EXPANDING UPPER LEVEL HIGH PRESSURE FROM THE CANADIAN YUKON TERRITORY. THE MAJOR UPPER AND SURFACE LOW IS NOW OVER THE NORTH CENTRAL BERING SEA WITH ITS ASSOCIATED FRONT DISSIPATING OVER THE WESTERN INTERIOR TO WESTERN KODIAK ISLAND. THE UPPER AND SURFACE LOW WILL REMAIN NEARLY STATIONARY WITH THE UPPER TROUGH TO THE SOUTH SOUTHWEST TO ANOTHER UPPER CENTER NEAR THE EXTREME WESTERN ALEUTIANS. THIS UPPER AND SURFACE LOW MOVES ACROSS THE WESTERN ALEUTIANS THEN TRACKS NORTH ALONG THE DATELINE. THE COMBINATION OF THE EXPANDING HIGH INTO EASTERN INTERIOR ALASKA AND THIS PERSISTENT UPPER AND SURFACE LOW AND TROUGH OVER THE BERING SEA AND ALEUTIAN CHAIN WILL HOLD THE SOUTHWEST ZONES IN THE RELATIVELY MOIST CLOUDY FLOW PATTERN AND THE EASTERN INTERIOR AND SOUTH CENTRAL ALASKA IN THE DRY WARM CONDITIONS. A THERMAL TROUGH WILL EXTEND FROM SOUTHEAST ALASKA TO THE NORTH GULF COAST AND PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND. EXPECT THIS TROUGH TO EXTEND INTO THE SOUTH CENTRAL REGION BY LATE FRIDAY AND PERSIST THROUGH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. THE SURFACE TROUGH THAT EXTENDS FROM SOUTHEAST ALASKA INTO THE SOUND WILL PERSIST THROUGH THE WEEKEND AS WELL.
