AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION FOR WESTERN SD AND NORTHEASTERN WY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RAPID CITY SD 305 PM MDT TUE JUL 23 2002 ZONAL FLOW WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE N CONUS THRU MUCH OF THE WEEK WITH UPPER HIGH SPINNING OVER THE SOUTHERN ROCKIES. THIS WILL RESULT IN VERY WARM TEMPS AND WIDELY SCT STORMS CONTINUING AS SHRTWVS ROTATE AROUND THE HIGH FROM TIME TO TIME. TIMING OF THESE WAVES IS THE MAIN FORECAST CHALLENGE OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. RIGHT NOW...LOW PRES OVER NE WY WITH WARM FRONT PUSHING NORTHWARD ACROSS N SD. SHOWERS AND STORMS ARE MOVING OUT OF EASTERN CWA. MORE STORMS DEVELOPING ACROSS W AND C WY AHEAD OF NEXT SHRTWV. THIS WAVE WILL PUSH AREA LATER TONIGHT WITH BEST CHANCES FOR STORMS ACROSS NE WY AND NW SD LATER THIS EVE AND OVERNIGHT. MOISTURE IS MARGINAL ACROSS THE AREA...BUT DECENT SHEAR AND CAPE OF AROUND 1000 J/KG COULD SUPPORT A FEW STRONG STORMS TONIGHT. SOME SHOWERS EXPECTED TO LINGER ACROSS N AND E ZONES WED MORN. SURF LOW WILL SLOWLY SLIDE EASTWARD OVERNIGHT AND TOMORROW WITH WEAK FRONT DROPPING SOUTH OVER THE AREA TOMORROW. A TIGHTENING PRES GRADIENT AND STEEPENING LAPSE RATES DURING THE DAY WILL ALLOW GUSTY NW WINDS TO DEVELOP DURING THE LATE MORN AND AFT HOURS...ESP OVER NW SD. SLIGHT CHANCES FOR STORMS ARE EXPECTED LATER TOMORROW AND AGAIN THU NIGHT AND FRI AS WEAK WAVES CONTINUE TO MOVE ACROSS. HIGH TEMPS IN THE 90S ARE EXPECTED. LOOKS LIKE BETTER CHANCES FOR STORMS THIS WEEKEND AS UPPER HIGH MOVES EAST AND SOMEWHAT COOLER AIR TRIES TO SETTLE SOUTH. .UNR...NONE. ST
