AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AMARILLO TX
201 PM CDT SUN JUN 2 2002

MID AND UPPER LEVEL RIDGE STRETCHES FROM EASTERN TEXAS NORTHWARD INTO
WESTERN IOWA. THIS RIDGE IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TO MOVE TO THE EAST.
THIS WILL OPEN THE DOOR FOR AN UPPER TROUGH TO GET ESTABLISHED OVER
THE WESTERN U.S. WITH TROUGH TO OUR WEST AND RIDGE TO OUR EAST...THE
PANHANDLES ARE UNDER SOUTHWEST FLOW. THIS COULD BRING SOME OF THE NEW
MEXICO CONVECTION OUR WAY THIS EVENING. WE WILL LOOK AT LATEST
RADAR TRENDS TO DECIDE ON WHETHER OR NOT TO MENTION A SLIGHT
CHANCE IN THE NORTHWEST.

ON MONDAY...LEE-SIDE TROUGH SHOULD PUSH INTO THE NORTHWEST SECTIONS.
IT WILL BE TOUGH TO GET SOMETHING GOING ALONG IT AS WARM TEMPERATURES
WILL REMAIN ALOFT...BUT WILL LEAVE SLIGHT CHANCES THERE FOR NOW.

COLD FRONT EDGES CLOSER TO THE NORTHERN ZONES MONDAY NIGHT...
SO WILL CONTINUE POPS THERE.

SHORT RANGE MODELS ARE GOING ALONG WITH THE OLD MRF/S HANDLING OF THE
WESTERN U.S. TROUGH TO DIFFERENT DEGREES. SOME ARE STRONGER AND SOME
ARE WEAKER. AT ANY RATE...COLD FRONT SHOULD MOVE THROUGH THE
PANHANDLES DURING THE DAY TUESDAY INTO TUESDAY NIGHT. THIS SHOULD BE
THE BEST TIME FOR THUNDERSTORM CHANCES...SO WILL RAISE POPS
ACCORDINGLY. THE OTHER QUESTION WILL BE HOW COOL WILL IT BE BEHIND
THE FRONT. WE WILL PROBABLY KEEP TEMPERATURES IN THE 80S ON TUESDAY
AS FRONT SLOWLY DRAGS THROUGH THE AREA. WEDNESDAY COULD ACTUALLY BE
THE COOLER DAY WITH FRONT SOUTH OF THE AREA. STILL WILL NOT GO AS
COLD AS LATEST MAV GUIDANCE SUGGESTS...BUT MAY TREND TOWARD THAT A
LITTLE.

WILL GO AHEAD AND LEAVE SMALL POPS IN THE FORECAST FOR WEDNESDAY AND
THURSDAY FOR ANYTHING THAT MAY DEVELOP IN THE NORTH TO NORTHWEST FLOW
ALOFT BEHIND THE UPPER TROUGH.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY LOOK TO BE WARM UP DAYS AS UPPER RIDGE BUILDS
BACK OVER. NEXT COLD FRONT IS DUE TO ARRIVE ON SUNDAY...SO WILL CUT
TEMPERATURES BACK SOME THERE.
