Dry conditions prevailed throughout the month for much of northern and central New Mexico. Afternoon breezes fanned several fires into major fire storms and elsewhere poor nighttime recovery of humidity levels left forest crews struggling to contain smaller blazes. Several cities have begun mandatory water restrictions. National forests are still open to public use, but with bans on any types of open flames. Farmers and cities face prospects of less than 40 percent of normal spring snow melt runoff with reservoir storage levels already near 25 to 50 year low points.
