Drought conditions worsened from extreme to exceptional during the month of July across extreme southwest Nebraska. Hot temperatures and much below normal rainfall during the month continued to stress crops and livestock in the area.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GOODLAND KS 208 PM MDT SUN JUN 30 2002 FORECAST CONCERN IS TEMPERATURES. 19Z SURFACE MAP ANALYSIS SHOWED A SURFACE TROUGH ACROSS SOUTHWEST NEBRASKA INTO SOUTHEAST COLORADO MOVING LITTLE. HIGH PRESSURE BOTH SURFACE AND ALOFT PERSISTS FROM SOUTHWEST CONUS NORTHEAST ACROSS MUCH OF CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS. WEAK COLD FRONT ACROSS SOUTHEAST SOUTH DAKOTA INTO NORTHEAST COLORADO WILL WEAKEN WITH TIME AND NOT GO MUCH FURTHER SOUTH. MODELS ALL SIMILAR IN CURRENT AND FUTURE TRENDS OF UPPER RIDGE AND SURFACE TROUGH ACROSS CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS THROUGH NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. WILL GO WITH THE MESOETA MODEL THROUGH FIRST 36 HOURS AND THEN WITH ETA OUT THROUGH 60 HOURS. BOTH MODELS MAINTAIN GOOD PERISTENCE WITH BEST SURFACE AND UPPER LEVEL FEATURES AS WELL AS WITH TEMPERATURES. FOR TONIGHT CONTINUED DRY WEATHER AND SOUTH TO SOUTHEAST WINDS OF 10 TO 15 MPH WILL OCCUR AS A LEE TROUGH REMAINS IN PLACE NEAR THE COLORADO AND KANSAS BORDER. WILL GO CLOSE TO GUIDANCE TEMPS IN THE UPPER 60S AND LOWER 70S. FOR MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT LITTLE OR NO CHANGE EXPECTED. STRONG UPPER RIDGE HOLDS IN PLACE. A MOIST UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM OVER SOUTHERN TEXAS MAY SHIFT A LITTLE FURTHER NORTH WITH AN OUTSIDE SMALL CHANCE OF GETTING ANY MOISTURE NEAR TO THE GOODLAND FORECAST AREA NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. WILL NOT INTRODUCE ANY POPS AT THIS TIME DUE TO THIS UNCERTAINTY. WILL MAINTAIN HOT GUIDANCE TEMPS IN THE UPPER 90S TO NEAR 100 DURING THE DAY AND LOW TEMPERATURES MAINLY IN THE UPPER 60S AND LOWER 70S. FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY THROUGH SUNDAY WILL MAKE NO CHANGES AT THIS TIME.
