AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LA CROSSE WI
305 PM CDT MON JUN 10 2002

FORECAST CONCERNS FOR THIS PACKAGE INCLUDE PRECIPITATION CHANCES
TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT...ALSO CLOUDS AND TEMPERATURES A
CONCERN.

19Z SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWS LOW PRESSURE ALONG THE NORTH
DAKOTA/SOUTH DAKOTA BORDER. WARM FRONT EXTENDS FROM THE LOW ACROSS
NORTHERN MINNESOTA...WITH TRAILING COLD FRONT SOUTHWARD INTO
WESTERN KANSAS. VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWING QUITE A FEW
CLOUDS AHEAD OF SYSTEM...WITH MAINLY CLEAR SKIES TO ITS WEST. WATER
VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWS WEAK WAVE ACROSS SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA GENERATING
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE AREA.

NEITHER THE 12Z ETA OR AVN INITIALIZED WITH WEAK 700MB WAVE ACROSS
KANSAS THIS MORNING...OTHERWISE NO MAJOR ERRORS. IN THE LONGER
TERM...AVN IS A LITTLE FASTER IN PUSHING THE FRONT THROUGH THE
FORECAST AREA AND HAVE TRENDED TOWARD THE SLIGHTLY SLOWER ETA.

IN THE SHORT TERM...WEAK WAVE NOW IN SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA...WILL
CONTINUE MOVING NORTHWARD...AS SECOND 700MB WAVE OVER KANSAS WEAKENS
AS IT PUSHES NORTH. FARTHER WEST...SURFACE BOUNDARY WILL PUSH INTO
WESTERN MINNESOTA THIS EVENING. CONVERGENCE ALONG FRONT...ALONG WITH
MODERATE INSTABILITIES ALREADY PRODUCING CONVECTION. THIS WILL
SLIDE EAST WITH FRONT. EXTENSIVE CLOUD COVER ACROSS WARM SECTOR WILL
LIMIT SEVER POTENTIAL ACROSS OUR AREA...BUT EXPECT CONVECTION TO
MOVE ALONG WITH FRONT TONIGHT.

ON TUESDAY...FRONT MOVES ACROSS THE FORECAST AREA AS UPPER LOW
TRANSVERSES TOWARD LAKE WINNIPEG. ATMOSPHERE MAY RECOVER ENOUGH FROM
OVERNIGHT AND MORNING CONVECTION FOR STRONGER STORMS IN THE
AFTERNOON. LIMITING FACTOR FOR SEVERE STORMS WILL BE WEAK LOW LEVEL
FLOW. WILL CONTINUE TO CARRY CHANCE POPS THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

DRIER AIR WILL BEGIN TO FILTER IN TUESDAY NIGHT AS FRONT SETTLES TO
OUR SOUTH. SOUTHERN ZONES WILL HAVE BEST CHANCE FOR LINGERING
CONVECTION. AFTER THAT...A DRY AND PLEASANT PERIOD FOR WEDNESDAY AND
WEDNESDAY NIGHT...WITH SHOWER CHANCES INCREASING AGAIN THURSDAY...AS
UPPER LOW AND ASSOCIATED SPOKES OF ENERGY ROTATE THROUGH THE AREA.

IN THE EXTENDED...UPPER LOW SLOWLY PUSHES EAST OF AREA AS NORTHWEST
FLOW EVOLVES OVER THE AREA. FAST MOVING SYSTEMS IN THE FLOW HARD
TO TIME AND THUS WILL KEEP CHANCES GOING THROUGH THE PERIOD.

GUIDANCE NUMBERS ONCE AGAIN NOT TO BAD...SO PLAN NO MAJOR
DEVIATIONS.

.LSE...NONE.
