AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DODGE CITY KS
257 AM CST SAT FEB 9 2002

...MAIN DIFFICULTY TODAY WILL BE SNOW CHANCES, TIMING AND AMOUNTS
ALONG WITH THE STRENGTH OF THE COLD CONVEYOR BELT WIND...

THE 00Z DIAGNOSTICS INDICATE THE DEEPENING MIDLATITUDE CYCLONE OVER
THE NORTHERN PLAINS AS A 130KT+ UPPER JET DIGS INTO THE WESTERN AND
CENTRAL CONUS. AT H5 THE UPPER COLD POOL NEAR SLC WAS AROUND -36C
AND TAKING AIM ON WESTERN KANSAS FOR TODAY. RAOB ANALYSIS SHOWED AN
EXTENSIVE MOIST LAYER ABOVE 600MB OVER THE NORTHERN PLAINS AND
CENTRAL ROCKIES WITH A LOWER LEVEL MOIST LAYER NOW SURGING SOUTH
ACROSS EAST COLORADO, SOUTHEAST WYOMING AND THE NEBRASKA PANHANDLE
WITH THE BARRIER JET AND SNOW ALREADY DEVELOPING IN UPSLOPE AGAINST
THE PALMER DIVIDE. FRONTAL FRACTURE APPEARS TO BE DEVELOPING NORTH
AND NORTHWEST OF THE SYSTEM. THE KDDC VWP HAS ALREADY IDENTIFIED A
SHEET OF 50KT+ WINDS AT AROUND 1KM AGL. THE MEDICINE BOW WIND
PROFILER WAS SHOWING 50KT+ AT AROUND 1KM BY 07Z WITH GRANADA AND
HAVILAND NOT QUITE AS STRONG AS THE KDDC VWP.

USE OF ISAOLBARIC FORCING FOR STEERING SUGGESTS THE MODELS ARE
GENERALLY ON TRACK WITH THIS SYSTEM IN DIGGING THE SURFACE LOW INTO
SOUTHEAST NEBRASKA AND NORTHEAST KANSAS BY MORNING. THE MODELS
APPEAR A BIT BEHIND IN THEIR LOWER LAYER MASS FIELDS GIVEN THE
CURRENT WINDS BEING OBSERVED. WITH THE STRENGTH OF THE DEVELOPING
MIDLATITUDE CYCLONE NOW BECOMING APPARENT WILL EXPECT THE FRONTAL
FRACTURE WRAP AROUND TO REACH A BIT FARTHER SOUTH BY MORNING WHICH
IS MOST SIMILAR TO THE AVN ON THE SYNOPTIC SCALE. THE MID
TROPOSPHERIC MOISTURE EVIDENT ON THE UPSTREAM SOUNDINGS SHOULD WORK
DOWN PROVIDING PRECIPITATION ACROSS MOST OF MY ZONES THIS MORNING
AND LASTING INTO THE EVENING HOURS BEFORE THE WRAP AROUND MOVES OFF
TO THE NORTHEAST. VERTICAL TEMPERATURE PROFILES INDICATE A SNOW
FORECAST WITH HEAVIEST AMOUNTS IN MY NORTHERN ZONES. THE PRESSURE
GRADIENT AND MOMENTUM MIX DOWN SHOULD MAKE FOR WINDS NEAR HIGH WIND
WARNING CRITERIA TODAY AND TONIGHT. GIVEN THE WIND AND THE
INCREASING PROBABILITY OF MEASURABLE SNOW WILL OPT TO GO WITH A
WINTER STORM WARNING FOR TODAY AND TONIGHT AND HIGHLIGHT MAINLY THE
WIND WITH BLOWING AND DRIFTING, ESPECIALLY IN THE NORTH. GUIDANCE IS
TOO WARM BOTH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY AND WILL TRIM BACK.

DAYS 3-7...
AFTER REVIEWING 09/00Z RUNS OF THE ETA AND AVN, AND EARLY PORTIONS
OF THE MRF, WILL NOT MAKING ANY ADJUSTMENTS AT THIS TIME TO THE
GOING EXTENDED. AS WAS MENTIONED IN THE PREVIOUS DISCUSSION, THERE
APPEARS TO BE A VIGOROUS SHORT WAVE MOVING THROUGH THE UPPER FLOW,
CROSSING DDC CWA AROUND WEDNESDAY NIGHT. IF THIS TRACK IS CORRECT,
WE MAY SEE AN EARLIER INCREASE IN CLOUDS THAN PRESENTLY FORECAST,
AND PERHAPS A LITTLE PRECIP IN WESTERN ZONES WED NIGHT INTO
THURSDAY. SINCE THIS IS SO FAR OUT AND SPEED UP SHORT WAVES IS
DIFFICULT TO GET A HANDLE ON, WILL NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES.

PRELIMINARY GUIDANCE FOR COORDINATION ONLY. OFFICIAL FORECASTS ARE
CONTAINED WITHIN THE DODGE CITY ZONE FORECAST.
