AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DODGE CITY KS
203 PM CST MON APR 1 2002

DAYS 1-2:
A STRONG SHORTWAVE TROUGH WAS DIGGING ESE INTO THE NORTHERN PLAINS
TODAY. THE ASSOCIATED SURFACE LOW OVER NEBRASKA WILL RACE EAST INTO
THE LAKES TONIGHT. A THERMAL LOW WAS LOCATED OVER SW KS THIS
AFTERNOON. THE ARCTIC FRONT MOVING ACROSS SD THIS AFTERNOON WILL
RACE SE OVERNIGHT, REACHING GCK BY 8Z AND P28 BY 11Z. WINDS WILL
EASILY EXCEED WIND ADVISORY CRITERIA FROM DDC-GCK AFTER 2 AM, AND
ACROSS ALL OF SW KS TUE MORNING. LOW CLOUDS WILL LAST A FEW HOURS
BEHIND THE FRONT, BUT SOME BREAKS ARE LIKELY BY NOON TUE. SKIES
SHOULD CLEAR TUE EVENING, WITH WINDS DROPPING OFF OVERNIGHT. LOWS IN
THE UPPER TEENS SEEM REASONABLE NORTH AND WEST, WITH 20-25
ELSEWHERE. THIS IS SEVERAL DEGREES BELOW THE GUIDANCE. 1033MB SFC
HIGH WILL BE SITUATED OVER NE KS WEDNESDAY, RIDGING BACK TO THE SW.
BOUNDARY LAYER WINDS WILL STILL STAY FROM THE EAST, PREVENTING ANY
WARMUP. GOING FCST NUMBERS LOOK HARD TO BEAT FOR WED.

DAYS 3-7...
THE DIAGNOSTICS TODAY CONTINUE TO SHOW A LACK OF CLEAR SIGNALS.
GLOBAL ANGULAR MOMENTUM ANOMALIES ARE DIFFICULT AT BEST TO
UNDERSTAND NOT HELPED MUCH BY AN APPARENT PROBLEM WITH THE HOVMOLLER
PLOTS AT CDC. THE OLR ANOMALIES ARE ALSO UNCLEAR IN SETTLING ON
EITHER A MOIST OR DRY PHASE OF THE MJO. THE GENERAL CIRCULATION
PATTERN OVER THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE IS JUST AS DIFFICULT TO DISCERN
AS IT DEPICTS A MIX OF WAVE NUMBERS IN BOTH THE LOWER AND HIGHER
LATITUDES.

HAVING SAID THE ABOVE, THE GENERAL TREND OF ALL THE MODELS IS TOWARD
A PROGRESSIVE PATTERN AND THEY ARE ALL IN RELATIVELY GOOD AGREEMENT
ON AT LEAST THE LONGER WAVE LENGTHS. ALL DEVELOP A POSITIVE HEIGHT
ANOMALY OVER THE BERING SEA ALLOWING THE PACIFIC UPPER FLOW TO
UNDERCUT THE HIGH AND BRING A SERIES OF PROGRESSIVE UPPER LEVEL
SHORT WAVE TROUGHS ACROSS THE PACIFIC INTO THE CONUS WITH TIME. THE
MRF, MRF ENSEMBLES AND AVN ARE IN QUITE GOOD AGREEMENT WITH THE
ECMWF AND THE CANADIAN AND WILL GENERALLY BE USED FOR THIS FORECAST.

THE MRF BRINGS MOISTURE NORTH FROM THE WESTERN GULF OF MEXICO INTO
THE KANSAS HIGH PLAINS THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY. IT DEVELOPS
PRECIPITATION ACROSS THE REGION IN THAT TIME FRAME IN RESPONSE TO A
SOUTHERN BRANCH SHORT WAVE ALOFT MOVING THROUGH. GIVEN THE CURRENTLY
ACTIVE SOUTHERN BRANCH OF THE WESTERLIES AND ITS PROPENSITY FOR
STOPPING GULF MOISTURE FROM COMING THIS FAR NORTH, AM VERY UNCERTAIN
ABOUT THIS SOLUTION COMING TO FRUITION. THIS IS ALSO A MUCH WETTER
SOLUTION FOR THE PLAINS THAN PREVIOUS RUNS OF THIS MODEL. FOR NOW
WILL NOT ADD PRECIPITATION TO THIS TIME FRAME PREFERRING TO WAIT FOR
THE NEXT RUN AND THUS AVOID A FLIP FLOP OF THE FORECAST. FRIDAY AND
SATURDAY WILL LIKELY SEE A SHARP WARM UP AS THE PACIFIC SYSTEM
DEEPENS IN THE LEE SLOPES AND WILL INCREASE TEMPERATURES ACCORDINGLY
THEN AND LOWER THEM SUBSTANTIALLY SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY AS THE
SYSTEM PASSES. THE NEXT WARM UP SHOULD BE DURING THE OUTLOOK PERIOD
WITH LITTLE MOISTURE AGAIN AVAILABLE FOR PRECIPITATION.
