AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE QUAD CITIES IA IL
200 PM CDT FRI JUL 5 2002

SURFACE MAPS SHOW HIGH PRESSURE RETREATING EASTWARD ACROSS MICHIGAN
WITH A DIFFUSE WARM FRONT EXTENDING NORTH TO SOUTH ACROSS CENTRAL
IOWA. SURFACE WINDS HAVE ALREADY BECOME SOUTHERLY ACROSS MUCH OF THE
CWA...BRINGING IN HIGHER DEWPOINT AIR AND THUS AN END TO THE LOWER
HUMIDITIES SEEN EARLIER TODAY ACROSS THE EASTERN 2/3RDS OF THE CWA.
UPPER AIR CHARTS SHOW HIGH PRESSURE DOMINATING THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY
WITH THE RIDGE EXTENDING NORTH INTO CANADA. A TROF EXTENDS FROM LOW
PRESSURE OVER SOUTHERN CANADA INTO THE NORTHWESTERN U.S.

FORECAST CHALLENGE IS PRECIP CHANCES THROUGHOUT THE PERIOD.

SHORT TERM...
ANY PRECIP WHICH DEVELOPS YET THIS AFTERNOON WILL CONTINUE INTO THE
EVENING HOURS BEFORE DISSIPATING. TONIGHT LOOKS MOSTLY CLEAR. SHOWERS
AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE AGAIN SATURDAY ESPECIALLY IN THE
AFTERNOON AND IN THE WESTERN CWA...BUT WITH LOW CHANCES DUE TO THE
SPOTTY NATURE OF THEM. CHANCES OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUE
INTO THE EXTENDED PERIOD...ALBEIT SMALL CHANCES. EXPECT MOSTLY SUNNY
SKIES EARLY IN THE DAYS THEN BECOMING PARTLY CLOUDY WITH THE
DEVELOPING CUMULUS. NIGHTS WILL BE MOSTLY CLEAR. GOING FORECAST HAS
GOOD HANDLE ON TEMPS SO I PLAN ON ONLY MINOR CHANGES WHERE THEY/RE
NEEDED.

EXTENDED...
UPPER LEVEL RIDGE GRADUALLY RETROGRATES WESTWARD OVER THE MOUNTAIN
STATES WHILE WE COME UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THE SOUTHWEST SIDE OF AN
UPPER LEVEL TROF. SURFACE FRONT MOVING THROUGH THE AREA MONDAY NIGHT
WILL BRING THE BEGINNING OF THE COOLER TEMPS. NORTHEAST WIND ON
SOUTHWEST SIDE OF SURFACE HIGH TO BRING US COOLER TEMPS BOTH WITH
THE SURFACE HIGH AND WINDS OFF LAKE MICHIGAN. BEST CHANCE OF PRECIP
MONDAY NIGHT IN CONJUNCTION WITH SURFACE FRONT. BUT THERE IS CHANCES
OF PRECIP EVERY DAY THROUGH EARLY TUESDAY. GOING EXTENDED HAS GOOD
HANDLE AND WILL PRETTY MUCH LET IT STAND.
