HAWAIIAN ISLANDS SYNOPTIC DISCUSSION AND GUIDANCE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI 10 AM HST WED JAN 30 2002 SUMMARY...THE AIR MASS IS STILL RATHER MOIST AND UNSTABLE SO THERE IS A CHANCE OF LOCALLY HEAVY SHOWERS. THE WEATHER WILL BE IMPROVING TOMORROW AND THE NEXT FEW DAYS. DISCUSSION...THE OLD KONA LOW TO THE WEST OF THE ISLANDS IS SLOWLY DRIFTING SOUTHWESTWARD AWAY FROM THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS. IT IS STILL CLOSE ENOUGH TODAY FOR ITS CLOUD SHIELD AND SCATTERED SHOWERS TO AFFECT OUR WEATHER. MOST SHOWERS ARE LOCATED NEAR KAUAI SSAND THE KAUAI CHANNEL FROM THE WAIANAE COAST WESTWARD. A LARGE AREA OF LESS INTENSE SHOWERS ARE LOCATED JUST SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST OF THE BIG ISLAND WITH HEAVIER SHOWERS FARTHER TO THE SOUTH. THE SHOWERS ON KAUAI HAVE CAUSED A LAND SLIDE NEAR WAILUA AND SINCE THE HANALEI RIVER IS RUNNING VERY HIGH AT THE BRIDGE AND RISING FROM WATER DRAINING OUT OF THE INTERIOR...THE SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN CLOSED AS A PRECAUTION IN SOME AREAS ALONG THE NORTH SHORE. BY TOMORROW THE LOW TO THE WEST WILL BE FAR ENOUGH AWAY FROM US TO GIVE US MORE SUNSHINE AND LESS SHOWERS. FROM FRIDAY ON THE WEATHER SHOULD BE BACK TO THE NORMAL FINE TRADE WIND VARIETY THAT HAWAII IS KNOWN FOR. THE NEXT HEAVY RAIN PATTERN IS SCHEDULED FOR 8 DAYS FROM NOW OR NEXT THURSDAY FEBRUARY 7TH AND THE FOLLOWING COUPLE OF DAYS. ROSENDAL .HFO.....WARNINGS.....NONE . WATCHES......NONE .
