HODANISH

REMAINDER OF AFD ISSUED 3 PM SUN 20 JAN 2002

...MAIN FORECAST CONCERNS ARE HIGH WIND POTENTIAL TONIGHT...AND
CHANCES FOR MT SNOW TUES NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY...

CURRENTLY: UPPER TROUGH AXIS WAS SLOWLY MOVING OUT OF SE COLORADO...
WITH STRONG NW FLOW ALOFT SETTLING IN ACROSS THE STATE. GUSTY NW
WINDS (25-45 KTS) WERE BEING REPORTED AT MAJORITY OF THE HIGHER TRRN
SFC OBS. OTHER THAN SOME SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS FOR THE CENT MTS...
SKIES WERE PARTLY CLOUDY TO MOSTLY SUNNY. STILL COOL...WITH TEMPS ON
THE PLAINS WARMING INTO THE MID 30S TO MID 40S.

TONIGHT AND MON: STRONG NW FLOW CONTINUES ACROSS THE CWA TONIGHT
THROUGH MONDAY AFTERNOON....AND SITUATION IS SETTING UP TO BE A
DECENT WIND EVENT. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE FOR EL PASO AND TELLER
COUNTIES DUE TO THE ORIENTATION OF THE HIGHER TERRAIN. MODEL
SOUNDINGS SHOW LITTLE TO NIL SHEAR. MM5 CONTINUES TO SHOW MOUNTAIN
WAVE SETTING UP AROUND 03Z TONIGHT AND LASTING THROUGH MON 18Z.
MESOETA INDICATING 50-60 KTS AT 500 MB...40-50 KTS AT 700 MB...AND
SURPRISING EVEN 40 KTS AT 850 MB WHICH TELLS ME THAT MESOETA IS
ACTUALLY PICKING UP ON POSSIBLE MT WAVE. WILL UPGRADE THE HIGH WIND
WATCH TO A WARNING FOR ZONES 67/71/72. IN OTHER AREAS...CONTINUED
PARTY CLOUDY AND INCREASED WINDS...WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SLIGHT
CHANCE FOR SNOW SHOWERS FOR THE CENT MTS TONIGHT AND TOMORROW. WITH
INCREASED WINDS...LOWER LEVELS WILL SURELY BE WELL MIXED AND AFTN
HIGHS SHOULD HAVE A GOOD HEAD-START IN THE MORN.

MON NIGHT AND TUES: ANOTHER UPPER LEVEL LOW PRES TROUGH DROPS DOWN
FROM THE PAC NW MON NIGHT...WHILE THE UPPER FLOW ACROSS THE STATE
BECOMES MORE WESTERLY...THEN SW ON TUES AS THE TROUGH PASSES OVER
THE WESTERN STATES. WILL KEEP ALL ZONES DRY MON NIGHT AND CONTINUED
WINDY SINCE GRADIENT TIGHTENS ONCE AGAIN WITH APPROACHING SYSTEM. ON
TUES...SW FLOW ALOFT AND NEARING SYSTEM WILL ONCE AGAIN BRING CHANCE
FOR SNOW SHOWERS TO THE CENT AND SW MTS FIRST...THEN BEGINS TO SPREAD
OUT TUES NIGHT. PARTLY CLOUDY AND CONTINUED WINDY ELSEWHERE.

TUES NIGHT AND WED: TROUGH AXIS IS PROGGED TO BE CROSSING THE GREAT
BASIN AND DIGGING SOUTH TUES NIGHT. MAIN BRUNT OF THE DYNAMICS LOOKS
TO DIVE SOUTH OF THE STATE ACROSS AZ AND NM...BUT INCREASED SW FLOW
AND MOISTURE SHOULD BRING SOME SNOW SHOWERS FOR AT LEAST THE HIGHER
TERRAIN. THEREFORE...WILL GO WITH INCREASING CLOUDS AND SLIGHT CHANCE
POPS FOR ALL AREAS EXCEPT THE E PLAINS AND S FOOTHILLS TUES NIGHT...
AND SLIGHT CHANCE TO CHANCE POPS WITH FRONTAL PASSAGE ALL AREAS ON
WED. USING CURRENT MODEL TIMING...THINGS SHOULD BE WINDING DOWN WED
EVE...WITH DECREASING CLOUDINESS OVERNIGHT.

FOR THE EXTENDED (THURS-SUN): LONG RANGE MODELS AGREE IN BRINGING A
VERY BROAD RIDGE INTO THE SW US...WITH NEAR ZONAL TO SLIGHTLY SW
FLOW ACROSS THE REGION. DRY AND WARMER LOOKS TO BE THE PATTERN FOR
THE END OF THE WEEK.

THANKS TO BOU FOR COORDINATION.

.PUB...HIGH WIND WARNING THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY MORNING FOR
PIKES PEAK REGION AND EL PASO COUNTY (ZONES 67/71/72)
