EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN DIEGO CA 920 AM PDT TUE MAY 14 2002 .SYNOPSIS...A LOW PRESSURE TROUGH ALONG THE WEST COAST WILL BRING COOLER WEATHER THROUGH MIDWEEK. STRONGER ONSHORE FLOW AND A COASTAL EDDY WILL DEEPEN THE MARINE LAYER FOR MORE COASTAL CLOUDS WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. BREEZY IN THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS EACH AFTERNOON. .DISCUSSION...A COASTAL EDDY IS IN THE FORMATIVE STAGES THIS MORNING WITH LIGHT SSE WINDS AT SEVERAL COASTAL STATIONS. SKIES WERE CLEAR AGAIN THIS MORNING WITH ONLY A SMALL PATCH OF STRATUS OFF THE COAST OF NORTHERN BAJA. ONSHORE GRADIENTS STRENGTHENED OVERNIGHT AND IT WONT BE QUITE AS HOT AS YESTERDAY WEST OF THE MOUNTAINS WHERE TEMPS WERE ABOUT 5 TO 10 DEGREES COOLER THAN 24 HOURS AGO. NEVERTHELESS...WITH FULL SUN TODAY SOME OF THE WARMER INLAND VALLEYS COULD STILL REACH THE LOWER 90S. ABOVE 4000 FEET THE TEMPERATURE PROFILE DIDNT CHANGE MUCH AND HIGH TEMPS IN THE MTNS AND DESERTS WILL BE CLOSE TO YESTERDAY HIGHS. THE FORECAST PROBLEM TODAY IS THE TEMPERATURE FORECAST THROUGH MIDWEEK. THE ETA AND NGM MORNING MODEL RUNS SHOWS THE TROUGH ALONG THE WEST COAST TO BE WEAKER AND THE COOLING MAY BE LESS THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. WILL SEE IF THE AVN OFFERS A SIMILAR SOLUTION FOR THE AFTERNOON FORECAST PACKAGE. IN THE EXTENDED...A BRIEF RIDGE BUILDS OVER THE WEST THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY FOR SLIGHT WARMING. OVER THE WEEKEND A HIGH AMPLITUDE PATTERN SETS UP ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH A DEEP LOW OVER THE EAST...A RIDGE OVER THE PLAINS...AND A DEEP TROUGH OVER THE EASTERN PACIFIC. THE AVN AND ECMWF ARE IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH THIS TROUGH WHICH WILL BRING BREEZY COOLER WEATHER EARLY NEXT WEEK. CURRENT FORECAST IN GOOD SHAPE FOR THE MOST PART.
