Area forecast discussion, Jun 30, 8:30 PM PST, 3 hours 30 minutes before
EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN DIEGO CA
930 PM PDT SUN JUN 30 2002

.SYNOPSIS...HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE SOUTHWEST WILL CONTINUE WARM DAYS
INLAND INTO MID WEEK. MOISTURE IN SOUTHERLY FLOW ALOFT WILL CAUSE A
SLIGHT CHANCE OF AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS IN THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS
TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. A SHALLOW MARINE LAYER WILL RESULT IN NIGHT
AND MORNING COASTAL LOW CLOUDS AND FOG. COOLER WEATHER IS EXPECTED
WITH A DEEPENING MARINE LAYER TOWARD THE END OF THE WEEK.

.DISCUSSION...LOW CLOUDS MANAGED TO CLEAR THE COAST THIS
AFTERNOON...AND SO FAR THIS EVENING...ONLY PATCHY LOW CLOUDS HAD
DEVELOPED. THE INVERSION HAS LOWERED A BIT...AND THE 00Z NKX
SOUNDING AND A RECENT LAX ACARS SOUNDING SHOWED THE INVERSION IN THE
1100-1400 FOOT RANGE AROUND THE AREA. THE EDDY IS SLOWLY DRIFTING SW
OUT OF OUR COASTAL REGION...SO SOME LOW-LEVEL OFFSHORE COMPONENT IS
EVIDENT...SO LOW CLOUDS PROBABLY WILL NOT MAKE IT QUITE AS FAR
INLAND TONIGHT VERSUS SAT NIGHT. HOWEVER...THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY
VALLEYS WILL PROBABLY NEED SOME MENTION OF LOW CLOUDS/FOG AS THEY
WILL REACH AT LEAST THE WESTERN PART OF THAT ZONE. WITH LESS EFFECT
FROM THE EDDY...MON SHOULD BE A BIT WARMER W OF THE MTNS...BUT THE
MTNS/DESERTS SHOULD HAVE SIMILAR TEMPS AS TODAY.

MONSOONAL MOISTURE WAS STILL FAR AWAY AS THE NEAREST TSTORMS WERE
OVER NE SONORA AND NEW MEXICO. HOWEVER...A RATHER SIGNIFICANT BAND
OF MOISTURE WAS MOVING NE AROUND 20N/125W. SOME OF THIS
MOISTURE...BOTH AT THE HIGH AND MID LEVELS WILL WRAP UP AROUND THE
CLOSED LOW WHICH WILL MEANDER JUST W OF 30N/120W UNTIL LATE TUE OR
WED WHEN IT SHIFTS NE TOWARDS THE AREA JUST W/NW OF LA. THE MOISTURE
SHOULD PEAK TUE...SO TSTORMS WOULD BE MOST LIKELY THEN...AND MOST
LIKELY OVER THE MTNS/DESERTS DUE TO THE MAXIMUM HEATING. AT THIS
POINT...DYNAMICS LOOK INSUFFICIENT FOR ACTIVITY W OF THE MTNS...BUT
IF A VORT LOBE ASSOCIATED WITH THE CLOSED LOW MOVES THROUGH...THEN
THINGS COULD CHANGE.

MODELS ARE CONVERGING BETTER ON A SOLUTION FOR WED TIMING OF THE LOW
MOVING BY TO OUR NW...SO THE MOISTURE ALOFT SHOULD DECREASE BY THU
JUL 4. SO...TSTORM CHANCES SHOULD BE NIL BY THEN...AND ONSHORE FLOW
AT MORE LEVELS SHOULD BRING COOLING W OF THE MTNS.

A QUICK ZONE UPDATE WILL BE ISSUED SHORTLY.

.SAN...NONE.
