MOJAVE DESERT/SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAS VEGAS NV
222 PM PST WED MAR 13 2002

SYNOPSIS...STRONG WINDS WILL CONTINUE ACROSS MUCH OF THE MOJAVE
DESERT AND SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN THIS EVENING IN ASSOCIATION WITH A
VIGOROUS COLD FRONT MOVING THROUGH THE AREA. TEMPERATURES BEHIND THE
FRONT WILL COOL SIGNIFICANTLY WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES THURSDAY AND
FRIDAY ABOUT 8-10 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL.

DISCUSSION...SURFACE FRONT WAS LOCATED ROUGHLY ALONG A SGU-VGT-IYK
LINE AT 2 PM. STRONGEST PRE-FRONTAL WINDS HAVE BEEN ACROSS SAN
BERNARDINO COUNTY AS EXPECTED. DAG RECORDED A 64 MPH GUST ON THEIR
21Z OB. THEY HAVE HAD SEVERAL OCCASIONS OF NEAR-ZERO VISIBILITY. CHP
REPORTED A POWER LINE WAS BLOWN DOWN ACROSS I-15 NEAR BARSTOW
EARLIER. CALTRANS HAS REPORTED SEVERAL MULTIPLE CAR ACCIDENTS
ASSOCIATED WITH THE HIGH WINDS AND LOW VIS. A SPOTTER IN KINGMAN
RECORDED GUSTS TO 60 MPH AT 2 PM. OLAF KNOLLS AND TWEEDS POINT HAVE
BOTH BEEN BOTH BEEN RECORDING STEADY WINDS IN THE 45-50 MPH RANGE
WITH GUSTS IN THE MID 50S. YUCCA MOUNTAIN AND RED ROCK CANYON HAVE
REPORTED SIMILAR CONDITIONS.

THE 18Z MESO-ETA INDICATES A VERY STEEP FRONTAL ZONE WITH AN INTENSE
700MB THERMAL GRADIENT BARELY LAGGING THE SURFACE BOUNDARY AND A
RAPID TRANSITION TO DOWNWARD FORCING THROUGH A VERY DEEP LAYER. THUS
EXPECT WINDS TO INCREASE SOME IN CLARK COUNTY NV AND NORTHERN MOHAVE
COUNTY AZ AS THEY SHIFT TO THE NW BEHIND THE FRONT. GRADIENT IS
FORECAST TO RELAX SOMEWHAT OVERNIGHT BUT BRISK NORTHERLY FLOW SHOULD
CONTINUE INTO THURSDAY. TEMPS WILL BE SUBSTANTIALLY COOLER FOR THE
NEXT COUPLE DAYS...ON THE ORDER OF 8-10 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL MOST
LOCATIONS.

MEDIUM RANGE GUIDANCE SHOWING BETTER CONSISTENCY IN DEVELOPING A
CLOSED LOW NEAR VANCOUVER ISLAND FRIDAY NIGHT AND MOVING IT DOWN THE
COAST SAT/SUN. THIS WILL MAINTAIN A DEEP POSITIVE TILT TROUGH OVER
THE WEST INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK AND KEEP THINGS COOL AND UNSETTLED
THROUGH AT LEAST TUESDAY.

IF THIS SCENARIO IS ACCURATE...THE BEST CHANCE FOR A SIGNIFICANT
WINTER STORM IN THE SIERRA WOULD BE IN THE SUN/MON TIME FRAME WHILE
THE BEST CHANCE FOR PRECIP ACROSS THE SOUTHERN DESERTS WILL LIKELY
BE MON/TUE. WILL ALSO HAVE TO BE WARY OF POTENTIAL MOUNTAIN WAVE
EVENT SUNDAY BOTH IN THE EASTERN SIERRA SLOPES AND ACROSS PARTS OF
CENTRAL NEVADA.

RUNK

.LAS...A HIGH WIND WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR MUCH OF SE CA, SRN NV,
AND NW AZ UNTIL 9 PM PST. A WIND ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR ERN CA
AND CNTRL NV UNTIL 7 PM PST. SEE LATEST STATEMENTS FOR DETAILS.
