UTAH AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UT
1055 AM MST FRI MAR 9 2001

SYNOPSIS...AN UPPER LOW WILL DROP SOUTHWARD THROUGH CALIFORNIA TODAY
AND TONIGHT...WITH A MOIST SOUTHERLY FLOW OVER UTAH. THE LOW WILL
TRACK INTO ARIZONA ON SATURDAY...WITH THE FLOW OVER UTAH BECOMING
EASTERLY BUT REMAINING MOIST.

DISCUSSION...MOIST AND UNSTABLE SOUTHERLY FLOW IS GENERATING FAIRLY
WIDESPREAD PRECIP OVER THE NORTHWESTERN PORTIONS OF THE FORECAST
AREA WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS OVER THE SOUTHWEST. A WEAK SHORT WAVE
THAT WAS WEST OF BAJA GOT PICKED UP IN THE CIRCULATION AHEAD OF
THE DEVELOPING LOW AND THIS HAS REALLY HELPED TO INCREASE THE
MOISTURE OVER THE REGION.

MOST OF THE SWRN SHOWERS HAVE NOT BEEN SHOWING UP VERY WELL ON KICX
88D AND NOW AN AREA OF CHAFF OVER WESTERN IRON COUNTY IS FURTHER
CONFUSING THE ISSUE. HOWEVER, I DO EXPECT SHOWERS TO INCREASE IN
COVERAGE OVER MOST OF THE FORECAST AREA THIS AFTERNOON WITH A FEW
THUNDERSTORMS AND CONTINUE INTO TONIGHT AS THE UPPER LOW OVER CA
DROPS SOUTH. PRECIP SHOULD DECREASE OVER THE NORTH ONCE THE FLOW
STARTS TO BECOME EASTERLY BUT THE AIRMASS OVER THE STATE IS FORECAST
TO STAY MOIST SO SCATTERED OR BETTER COVERAGE IS PROBABLY OK. IT
APPEARS THAT ADVISORY LEVEL SNOW IS POSSIBLE FOR THE SOUTHERN MTNS
AND WILL PROBABLY ISSUE THIS WITH THE AFTERNOON PACKAGE.

THE CANYON WIND EVENT FOR THE WASATCH FRONT STILL LOOKS LIKE IT
WILL DEVELOP BUT PROBABLY NOT UNTIL LATER SAT MORNING...AND THEN
END SAT EVE. WATCH STILL LOOKS OK FOR NOW, BUT WILL CONSIDER KEEPING
IT JUST A WATCH WITH THIS AFTERNOON'S FORECASTS DUE TO LATER ONSET.

HAVE UPDATED TO INCLUDE POSSIBILITY OF FREEZING RAIN FOR THE COLDER
NORTHERN VALLEYS, AS FREEZING LEVELS ARE FAIRLY HIGH BUT SOME OF
THE VALLEY BOTTOMS STILL HAVE TRAPPED COLD AIR. MOST OF THIS SHOULD
MIX OUT THIS AFTERNOON WITH VALLEY TEMPS CREEPING ABOVE FREEZING.
