Area forecast discussion, Jun 2, 2:10 PM MST, 1 hour 20 minutes before
UTAH AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UT
310 PM MDT SAT JUN 2 2001

SYNOPSIS...A COLD FRONT WILL MOVE SOUTHEAST ACROSS THE BEEHIVE STATE
TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY. COOLER AIR WILL SETTLE ACROSS THE STATE
BEHIND THE FRONT FOR SUNDAY AND MONDAY. DRY...WARM HIGH PRESSURE
ALOFT WILL RETURN FOR THE MIDDLE OF THE WEEK.

DISCUSSION...SURFACE FRONT ON THE MOVE AGAIN AS FIRST SHORTWAVE
ROTATES EAST-NORTHEAST INTO SRN ID. THIS UPPER LEVEL FEATURE
APPEARS TO BE HANDLED WELL BY THE 12Z/18Z MODELS THIS MORNING.
SPOTTY CONVECTION HAS DEVELOPED ALONG THE SURFACE BOUNDARY...AND
BACK ALONG THE UT/NV BORDER ALONG THE SRN END OF THE SHORTWAVE.
BOTH OF THESE CONVECTIVE AREAS SHOULD PERSIST AT LEAST INTO
MIDEVENING. GOOD VERTICAL SHEAR NOTED OVER NRN/WRN UT...BUT WITH
ONLY MODEST INSTABILITY AND WEAKENING DYNAMIC SUPPORT...HAVE DOUBTS
THAT ANY SIGNIFICANT/STRONG CONVECTION WILL DEVELOP.

SECONDARY SHORTWAVE JUST REACHING THE OREGON COAST SCHEDULED TO
REACH UT EARLY SUNDAY. STRONG LOW-LEVEL COLD ADVECTION...LIMITED
MOISTURE...AND WARMING IN THE MID-LEVELS WORKING AGAINST PRECIP.
HOWEVER...TEMPS WILL BE DOWN QUITE A BIT UP NORTH SUNDAY...AND
PROBABLY INTO MONDAY. SRN SECTIONS OF THE STATE WONT COOL QUITE...
BUT WILL STILL BE DOWN NOTICEABLY FROM RECENT DAYS.

THE UPPER RIDGE...WHICH HAS BEEN THE PREDOMINATE FEATURE THIS LATE
SPRING...SCHEDULED TO MAKE A COMEBACK BY THE MIDDLE OF THE WEEK.
HOT AND DRY THE TREND TO THE FORECAST HEADING INTO NEXT WEEK. NEXT
NOTABLE THREAT OF PRECIP WOULD BE TOWARDS THE LATTER HALF OF NEXT
WEEKEND...WHERE ANOTHER WEAKENING PACIFIC SHORTWAVE RIPPLES THROUGH
THE NRN HALF OF THE REGION.
