A cold-core upper low moved into western lower Michigan during the day. Numerous thunderstorms developed ahead of the system, and the cold air aloft was conducive to hail development. Many storms produced pea sized hail; a few went beyond that and reached severe criteria.

SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DETROIT/PONTIAC MI 1112 AM EDT SAT JUN 2 2001 UPPER LOW WILL BE ROTATING INTO THE LOWER PENINSULA THIS AFTERNOON. MORNING SOUNDINGS SHOW 500MB TEMPERATURES OF MINUS 23C ACCOMPANYING THIS UPPER LOW AS IT MOVES INTO SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN. THERE IS ALSO SOME DRYING TAKING PLACE JUST AHEAD OF THIS UPPER LOW AND SOME SUNSHINE IS BEING REPORTED IN SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH CENTRAL LOWER MICHIGAN. BIG QUESTION FOR THIS AFTERNOON WILL BE WHETHER OR NOT WE WILL SEE ENOUGH SUNSHINE TO DESTABLIZE THE AIRMASS OVER SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN. THE DRY SLOT TO OUR WEST APPEARS TO BE FILLING IN AND THERE ARE ALREADY SOME SHOWERS DEVELOPING IN THIS AREA. PRESENT INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE EASTERN COUNTIES MAY DESTABILIZE ENOUGH TO GET SOME SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS TO DEVELOP WITH THE PRIMARY THREAT BEING HAIL.
