SYNOPSIS...A PACIFIC STORM WILL MOVE INTO CALIFORNIA TODAY AND SLIDE
DOWN THE WEST COAST...THEN INTO ARIZONA LATE SATURDAY. CLOUDS WILL
INCREASE OVER OUR AREA TODAY AND TONIGHT...WITH MOST PRECIPITATION
IMPACTING THE SOUTHERN AND EASTERN PORTIONS OF UTAH.

DISCUSSION...INTERESTING WEATHER PATTERN SETTING UP FOR UTAH THIS
WEEKEND.  A STORM SYSTEM ALONG THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST THIS
MORNING WILL SLIDE SOUTHEASTWARD THROUGH CALIFORNIA TODAY AND
TONIGHT...AND BE LOCATED ALONG THE SOUTHWEST ARIZONA/MEXICO BORDER BY
MIDDAY SATURDAY. THIS LOW WILL THEN MOVE NORTHWARD SATURDAY
AFTERNOON AND NIGHT. A MOIST SOUTHERLY FLOW IN ADVANCE OF THIS
SYSTEM IS BRINGING MID AND HIGH LEVEL MOISTURE TO THE STATE TODAY.
HOWEVER...ANY WIDESPREAD PRECIPITATION SHOULD REMAIN TO OUR WEST,
CLOSER TO THE LOW CENTER.  THUS...WILL LOWER POPS IN MANY AREAS OF
THE STATE FOR TODAY.  THE THREAT OF PRECIPITATION WILL INCREASE
TONIGHT AND SATURDAY OVER MAINLY SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL UTAH...WITH
THE ACTION SHIFTING TO MAINLY EASTERN UTAH BY LATE SATURDAY.
ADVISORY SNOW AMOUNTS MAY FALL THIS WEEKEND IN THE SOUTHERN
MOUNTAINS AND SOME OF THE EASTERN VALLEYS FAVORED BY SOUTHEAST
FLOW...SUCH AS PRICE.  WILL TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THIS WHEN ALL THE
NEW MODEL DATA COMES IN.

OF INCREASING CONCERN IS THE LIKELIHOOD OF CANYON WINDS ALONG THE
WASATCH FRONT TONIGHT INTO SUNDAY.  AS THIS LOW TAKES SHAPE TO OUR
SOUTHWEST...HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD OVER THE NORTHERN ROCKIES.  THE
12Z ETA SUGGESTS THAT A TIGHT SURFACE PRESSURE GRADIENT WILL DEVELOP
BETWEEN SLC AND RIW. ADDITIONALLY...700 MB WINDS BECOME EASTERLY
OVER NORTHERN UTAH TONIGHT...AND ACTUALLY INCREASE ON SATURDAY.
WHILE THE THERMAL STRUCTURE IS NOT ALL THE FAVORABLE (NOT MUCH COLD
AIR ADVECTION AT 700 MB), THE STRONG SURFACE PRESSURE GRADIENT AND
EASTERLY FLOW ALOFT WILL PROBABLY PRODUCE ADVISORY OR EVEN WARNING
LEVEL CANYON WINDS BEGINNING TONIGHT AND CONTINUING INTO SUNDAY.
WILL ISSUE A HIGH WIND WATCH FOR THE WASATCH FRONT AND UTAH'S CACHE
VALLEY VALID TONIGHT AND SqATURDAY...AND WILL DECIDE THIS AFTERNOON
WHETHER TO GO WITH A WARNING OR ADVISORY.

A large storm brought more snow to Southern Utah. Torrey and Teasdale picked up a foot of snow, with Capitol Reef NP reporting 11 inches, and Brian Head checking in with 10 inches.
