HEMISPHERIC WATER VAPOR LOOP SHOWS BUILDING RIDGE OVER THE EASTERN
PACIFIC WITH UPSTREAM TROF NEAR 170W.  SATELLITE DERIVED WINDS AT
250 MB WERE NEAR 150KTS AT 00Z LAST EVE.  BASED ON THESE
FACTORS...THE UPPER LOW NEAR THE 4 CORNERS AREA IS EXPECTED TO DIG
SOUTH TODAY AND TONIGHT.  WITH SUCH A LONG WAVELENGTH BETWEEN THIS
SYSTEM AND THE UPSTREAM TROF IT WOULD BE RELATIVELY SLOW TO LIFT
OUT. WARM ADVECTION PATTERN SETS UP TODAY OVER THE FORECAST AREA
WITH BEST ISENTROPIC LIFT IN THE LATE MORNING THROUGH EVENING TIME
PERIOD. SATELLITE IMAGERY ALSO INDICATES A JET STREAK MOVING THROUGH
NORTHERN MEXICO TURNING NORTHEAST AND THIS FEATURE MAY ENHANCE LIFT
LATER TODAY. BASED ON MODEL SOUNDINGS BELIEVE PRECIP WILL BE SNOW
THOUGH MAY SEE SOME SLEET ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST ZONES FOR A BRIEF
TIME TODAY BEFORE CHANGING TO SNOW. LIMITED BOUNDARY LAYER MOISTURE
AND RELATIVELY WARM GROUND /AT LEAST INITIALLY/ SHOULD KEEP SNOW
AMOUNTS IN THE 1-3 INCH RANGE ON AVERAGE. HOWEVER THE SUBCLOUD LAYER
WILL HAVE TO SATURATE BEFORE EVEN THOSE VALUES ARE REALIZED. WILL GO
AHEAD AND ISSUE AN ADVISORY FOR ALL ZONES TODAY THROUGH THIS
EVENING. ISENTROPIC LIFT WEAKENS OVERNIGHT SO EXPECT ONLY LIGHT
SNOWFALL. CHANCE OF SNOW WILL CONTINUE INTO WEDNESDAY BUT AMOUNTS
ARE HIGHLY QUESTIONABLE BASED ON UNCERTAINITY OF TRACK OF UPPER LOW
ONCE IT DOES BEGIN TO LIFT OUT. AFTER THIS SYSTEM MOVES OUT OF THE
AREA THE UPPER AIR PATTERN RETURNS TO MORE ZONAL FLOW RESULTING IN
LEE TROFING AND WARMER TEMPS.

A strong upper level storm system translated across the southern Rockies, into far southwestern Texas, and then across central Texas on the 27th and 28th. Cold air had already spread into the region and was deep enough to support snow over much of the South Plains by late on the 27th. The precipitation began as sleet over the Rolling Plains on the 27th but rather quickly changed to snow during the afternoon. By early afternoon on the 28th, one to four inches of snow covered the entire South Plains and extreme southern Panhandle with between six and ten inches of snow reported over Cottle, Dickens, King, Kent and Stonewall Counties of the Rolling Plains. The heavy snow impeded travel across the region through the 29th.
