Event Summary for 10/23/01:On the evening of October 23, a warm front extended east from Central Iowa through Northern Illinois. The combination of warm air riding northward over this boundary, vertical wind sheer associated with the warm front, and a potent short wave trough of energy in the upper atmosphere, helped bring strong to severe thunderstorms to parts of Northeast Iowa and Northern Illinois. These storms produced severe hail as they moved along the front in this area. At one point, one inch diameter hail covered the ground over a large stretch of Northern Stephenson County in Illinois.
