WESTERN MONTANA AND NORTH CENTRAL IDAHO FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MISSOULA MT
245 PM MST TUE MAR 13 2001

SHORT TERM...MAIN PROBLEM OR QUESTION OF THIS FORECAST PACKAGE IS
WHAT TO ISSUE IN THE CLEARWATER MOUNTAINS. MODELS IN ALIGN WITH
BRINGING BULLSEYE QPF FOR 12-24 HOURS OVER NORTH CENTRAL IDAHO WITH
QPFS RANGING FROM .45 TO .80 OF AN INCH OF PCPN. THIS SHOULD BE
ENOUGH TO WARRANT A SNOW ADVISORY FOR TONIGHT AND WED FOR AROUND 3-5
INCHES IN THE MOUNTAINS ABOVE 5500 FEET. MODELS CUT BACK ON 700 MB
WEST WINDS TO 30 TO 45 KTS FROM 50-55KTS IN PREVIOUS RUNS. WINDS WILL
STILL BE STRONG ENOUGH FOR SOME GUSTS...HENCE WILL PUT OUT A SNOW AND
BLOWING SNOW ADVISORY FOR ID ZONES 5-6. CDFNT MOVES THROUGH THIS EVE
AND TONIGHT OVER MONTANA...COOLING TEMPS AND BRINGING SNOW LEVELS TO
VALLEY FLOOR LATE THIS EVE TOWARD MIDNIGHT. NOT MUCH IN THE WAY OF
ACCUMULATION IN THE VALLEYS AS PCPN WILL BECOME MORE SHOWERY AFTER
MIDNIGHT AND POST FRONTAL PASSAGE...AND WITH THE BEST DYNAMICS OVER
CNTRL IDAHO. TEMPS COOL 5-10 DEGREES WED/WED NIGHT.

EXTENDED...MODELS IN FAIR AGREEMENT TODAY...WITH SPLITTING SYSTEM ON
FRIDAY TAKING BRUNT OF ENERGY TOWARD SOUTHERN ROCKIES. WEAK SECONDARY
WAVE IN NORTHERN BRANCH SLIDES ACROSS THE AREA SATURDAY...THEN LOW
AMPLITUDE RIDGE BEGINS TO BUILD OVER NORTHWEST SUNDAY. RIDGE IS
FLATTENED QUICKLY BY SERIES OF PACIFIC SHORTWAVES EARLY NEXT
WEEK...WITH MRF SHOWING STRONGER TROUGH ON TUESDAY. HARD TO FIND A
TOTALLY DRY DAY...BUT WILL BACK OFF A LITTLE ON PRECIP CHANCES FRI
THROUGH SUN. SULLIVAN
