SOUTHEAST IDAHO AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE POCATELLO/IDAHO FALLS ID 250 PM MDT SUN JUL 22 2001 LATEST H2O SATIMG CONTINUES TO SHOW A SHALLOW UPPER TROUGH OVER THE REGION WHILE SEVERAL EMBEDDED FEATURES ROTATE THROUGH THE FLOW. FIRST S/WV WAS NOTED DIGGING ESE THROUGH THE BASE OF THE TROUGH OVER NRN CALIFORNIA AND BEGINNING TO TURN NE TOWARD IDAHO. FURTHER UPSTREAM TWO ADDITIONAL FEATURES WERE NOTED DIGGING SOUTH THROUGH BC AND THE PAC NW. AND FINALLY...A PAC DISTURBANCE WAS NOTED PUSHING EAST ACROSS THE GULF TOWARD THE NW CANADIAN COAST. MODELS INITIALIZED WELL AND IN GENERAL AGREEMENT THAT NRN CALIFORNIA S/WV WILL EJECT NE ACROSS NRN NEVADA/SRN IDAHO TONIGHT WITH BOTH AVN/ETA PRODUCING SOME WEAK PCPN RETURNS OVER SRN IDAHO IN VICINITY OF BAROCLINIC ZONE POSITIONED OVER AND SOUTH OF THE FORECAST AREA. BELIEVE MOISTURE AND INSTABILITY LACKING TO PRODUCE MUCH OF ANY PCPN IN THE FORECAST AREA TONIGHT SO WILL COVER WITH PASSING CLOUD WORDING IN OUTGOING FORECAST. NEXT UPSTREAM FEATURES DIG SOUTH THROUGH THE PAC NW TONIGHT/MONDAY REINFORCING WEAK UPPER TROUGH OVER REGION AND ALLOWING COLD POOL ALOFT TO SETTLE OVER CNTRL MOUNTAIN ZONES ONCE AGAIN. WILL CONTINUE WITH IDEA OF ISOLATED AFTERNOON CONVECTION IN THE MOUNTAINS DUE TO WEAK INSTABILITY AND LACK OF SIGNIFICANT DYNAMICS TO FUEL TSTM DEVELOPMENT. UPPER TROUGH CONTINUES TO WEAKEN MONDAY NIGHT/TUESDAY AS UPPER TROUGH IS STRETCHED AS INCOMING S/WV ENERGY DRIVES STRONGER WEST FLOW ACROSS SRN CANADA. REMNANTS OF UPPER COLD POOL INSTABILITY TO REMAIN OVER FORECAST AREA TO HELP TRIGGER MOUNTAIN SHOWERS AGAIN ALONG THE MONTANA BORDER TUESDAY AFTERNOON...OTHERWISE DRY. IN THE EXTENDED...AVN/MRF CONSISTENT WITH THE IDEA THAT AN EMBEDDED S/WV FEATURE WILL CLIP THE PANHANDLE WEDNESDAY WHILE THE BEST INSTABILITY/DYNAMICAL FORCING REMAINS ALONG THE MONTANA BORDER. BY THURSDAY...DRY AND STABLE WEST FLOW ALOFT SHOULD INHIBIT MOST CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT AS THE PAC LOW SLOWLY PROGRESSES EAST ACROSS NRN CANADA ALLOWING FOR SLIGHTLY WARMER TEMPERATURES AS HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE SRN PLAINS SPREADS WEST LATE IN THE PERIOD.
