Extreme Cold in Florida, January 1, 2001
The second and coldest night of a two-night freeze in south Florida saw minimum air temperatures ranging from 25 to 30 degrees over interior sections of the peninsula. In the metropolitan areas of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties temperatures were in the middle 30s over the western suburbs.

The second and coldest night of a two-night freeze in south Florida saw minimum air temperatures ranging from 25 to 30 degrees over interior sections of the peninsula. In the metropolitan areas of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties temperatures were in the middle 30s over the western suburbs. In the downtown metro areas, temperatures were in the lower 40s with the temperatures in the mid 40s at the beach. Crop damage included losses to corn and newly planted sugar cane in Palm Beach County, and to certain vegetables in Hendry and eastern Collier counties. During the freeze, more than 40 house fires were reported, most associated with portable heating devices.

THE UPPER TROUGH MOVING THROUGH THE EASTERN U.S. TODAY WILL HELP
WITH SOME OF THE HIGHER CLOUDINESS TO KEEP US FROM BEING COMPLETELY
SUNNY. BASICALLY WITH NOTHING TO MOVE THE SURFACE HIGH OVER TEXAS
AND THE LOWER PLAINS THERE SHOULD NOT BE THAT MUCH OF A CHANGE IN
THE WEATHER THROUGH THE FIRST PART OF THE WEEK. BY WEDNESDAY A WEAK
REINFOREMENT OF THE COLD AIR SHOULD MOVE INTO THE AREA AND THE
FRONTAL SYSTEM ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SHOULD HAVE ENOUGH ISENTROPIC
LIFT TO AT LEAST BRING A LOT OF CLOUDS ACROSS THE AREA. THIS WILL
GIVE US SOME WARMER MINIMUMS TUESDAY NIGHT AND KEEP THE MAXIMUMS
DOWN ON WEDNESDAY. SHOULD NOT BE ENOUGH LIFT FOR PRECIPITATION.
THE LOW TEMPERATURES THIS MORNING AND STILL SOME WINDS OF 8 MPH WILL
MEAN THAT WE WILL HAVE TO START THE DAY WITH A WIND CHILL ADVISORY.
FOR THE MARINE WITH THE SURFACE RIDGE IN OUR AREA THE WINDS SHOULD
REMAIN RELATIVELY LIGHT FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. WHEN THE NEXT
FRONTAL SYSTEM COMES IN ON TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY THEN THE
WINDS SHOULD INCREASE BACK TO SMALL CRAFT.
THE EXTENDED WILL SEE OUR ONLY CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION ON WEDNESDAY
NIGHT AND THAT WILL DEPEND ON THE LOW DEVELOPMENT OVER THE ATLANTIC
