EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN DIEGO CA
930 AM PST TUE MAR 6 2001
...SYNOPSIS...
THE STORM WILL MOVE THROUGH TONIGHT CAUSING SHOWERS AND A CHANCE OF
THUNDERSTORMS INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING. WEAK HIGH PRESSURE WILL BRING FAIR
WEATHER WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH THURSDAY. ANOTHER STORM WILL CAUSE
A CHANCE OF RAIN FRIDAY AND SATURDAY. DRY EARLY NEXT WEEK UNDER HIGH
PRESSURE.
...DISCUSSION...
MODERATE SHOWERS MOVED THROUGH THIS MORNING BUT DRY SLOT HAS MOVED IN
FOR DECREASE IN ACTIVITY. 12Z NKX SOUNDING HAD DEEP MOIST LAYER WITH
MODERATELY STRONG SLY WINDS. WEAK OFFSHORE GRADIENTS TO SURFACE LOW OFF
COAST.
UPPER LOW OFF COAST EXPECTED TO TRACK ACROSS EXTREME SRN CA/NRN BAJA
TONIGHT. THIS WILL CONTINUE TO FEED MOISTURE OVER OUR CWFA IN S FLOW
INTO TONIGHT WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR MODERATE OR HEAVY RAIN LATE THIS
AFTERNOON/EVE. THE COLDER AIR MOVING IN ALOFT WILL ALSO CAUSE A CHANCE
OF THUNDERSTORMS. 850 MB TEMPS STAY RELATIVELY HI SO STILL ONLY EXPECT
MOST SNOW LEVELS DOWN TO NEAR 6000 FT BUT COULD BE LOCALLY LOWER IN
SHOWERS. MIGHT NEED SNOW ADVISORY TONIGHT. RAINFALL TOTALS SHOULD BE IN
THE HALF TO ONE INCH RANGE...ALTHOUGH THEY WILL BE QUITE VARIABLE DUE TO
SHOWERY NATURE OF PRECIP WITH LOCAL LARGER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE. WEAKENING
SURFACE GRADIENTS AND WINDS ALOFT WILL RESULT IN DECREASING MOUNTAIN/
DESERT WINDS. RESIDUAL MOISTURE COULD CAUSE A FEW LINGERING SHOWERS INTO
WED AM...BUT GENERALLY GOOD DVV WED WITH DRYER NW FLOW ALOFT FOR A QUICK
END TO SHOWERS. SHORT WAVE RIDGE THU FOR FAIR AND WARMER WEATHER.
LONGER RANGE PROGS INDICATE ANOTHER LOW DROPPING DOWN THE COAST FOR A
CHANCE OF MORE SHOWERS FRI AFTERNOON INTO SAT. DRY SUNDAY INTO EARLY
NEXT WEEK WITH RIDGE OVER E PAC.
