SOUTHWEST ARIZONA/SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PHOENIX AZ
1005 AM MST FRI JUL 6 2001

.SYNOPSIS...
A WEAK LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVING NORTH ACROSS THE BAJA PENNISULA
WILL ENHANCE A SOUTHERLY FLOW OF MOIST AIR ACROSS ARIZONA TODAY.
THIS WILL LEAD TO ANOTHER ROUND OF AFTERNOON AND EVENING THUNDER
STORMS...PARTICULARLY OVER NORTHERN AND SOUTHEASTERN ARIZONA. THE
BAJA CALIFORNIA LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS FOREACAST TO WEAKEN TONIGHT
AS IT MOVES INTO CALIFORNIA...SPREADING DRIER AIR INTO SOUTHEAST
CALIFORNIA AND SOUTHWEST ARIZONA SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
A STRONG MONSOON FLOW ALOFT FROM MEXICO WILL BECOME MORE ESTABLISHED
AGAIN SUNDAY THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK...RESULTING IN AN INCREASE IN
AFTERNOON AND EVENING THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY STATEWIDE.

.DISCUSSION...
MID LEVEL VORT MAX INITIALIZED BY ALL MODELS DOWN INVOF KOLS AT 12Z
EXPECTED TO MOVE NWWD TODAY. STRONG MID LEVEL DRYING NOTED ON VIS
SATELLITE IMAGERY TO REAR OF THIS FEATURE PROBABLY ALSO ASSOCIATED
WITH SOME SUBSIDENCE. SO...AREAS TO S OF CURRENT CLOUD BAND LIKELY
TO SEE A DOWNER CONVECTIVE AFTERNOON...ESPECIALLY IN LIGHT OF NO
REAL LARGE SCALE TRIGGER. MEANWHILE...FURTHER TO N IN CWFA...SOME
UPPER LEVEL DIFFLUENCE SERVING TO ALLOW WHAT STORMS THAT DO FORM TO
GET PRETTY TALL...AT TIMES PEAKING AT AROUND 50K. RADAR ESTIMATED
STORM TOTALS OF OVER 2 INCHES IN A COUPLE OF SPOTS...AND WITH SOME
TRAINING...WE DECIDED TO GO WITH SMALL STREAM FLOOD ADVISORY FOR WRN
MARICOPA COUNTY W OF PHX UNTIL 11 AM. THIS STILL LOOKING GOOD...
THOUGH IF ACTION CONTINUES WILL HAVE TO EXTEND THIS ADVISORY BOTH IN
TEMPORAL AND AREAL COVERAGE. ZONES OVERALL IN OKAY SHAPE...THOUGH
WILL HAVE TO UPDATE FOR FIRST PERIOD TRENDS. MEANWHILE...TOMORROW
STILL LOOKS LIKE A DOWNER DAY WITH DRIER MID LEVEL AIR AND NO GOOD
TRIGGERING MECHANISM. THIS CURRENTLY IN FORECASTS. ESTLE
