High Wind in Alaska, September 22 to 24, 2001
A complex low, in the 970 mb range for central pressure, moved east just north of the Aleutian Chain Saturday and early Sunday. Late Sunday morning, the center re-formed south of Port Heiden at about 969 mbs.

A complex low, in the 970 mb range for central pressure, moved east just north of the Aleutian Chain Saturday and early Sunday. Late Sunday morning, the center re-formed south of Port Heiden at about 969 mbs. The low continued to loop eastward into the Gulf of Alaska and began to slowly weaken thereafter.Strong west and northwest winds were observed on the back side of the storm. Following are peak conditions at selected sites across the Aleutians.Shemya - Westerly gusts of 73 mph between 2 and 3 pm ADT Saturday.Adak - Northwest gusts of 67 mph from 2 - 3 am ADT Sunday.Atka - Northwest gusts reached 61 mph between 6 and 7 am ADT Sunday.Ship report from the "LAKR", north of Kiska, reported Northwest winds of 60 mph at 10 pm ADT Saturday.Dutch Harbor - Gusts from the northwest peaked at 86 mph at 3:30 pm ADT Sunday.Further east along the Alaska Peninsula, the Cold Bay ASOS recorded northwest gusts of 50 mphat 1 pm ADT Monday.
