High Wind in Alaska, March 5, 2001
An intense low moved trough the Aleutian chain near Dutch Harbor Sunday around 956 mbs. At Adak, wind gusts remained just under 60 mph.

An intense low moved trough the Aleutian chain near Dutch Harbor Sunday around 956 mbs. The low then continued slowly north northeast into the Bering Sea.At Dutch Harbor, northwest wind gusts of 60 and 61 mph were recorded on 3 observations between 8:15 am and 2:55 pm Monday.At Adak, wind gusts remained just under 60 mph. Moderate to heavy snow, accompanied by brief blizzard conditions, were reported from just before 3 am Monday to just after noon that same day.The F/V "Amber Dawn", 6 miles north of Atka, sank very early Monday while offloading their catch of Pacific cod to a larger processing vessel, the "Katie Ann". Three persons on board were rescued, two were missing. By later Monday morning, the Coast Guard reported that winds over the open water had increased 50 - 70 mph. The weather was severe enough to ground at least one rescue chopper.
